    GCAC Annouces Winners of Individual Community Arts Partnership Awards

    Philanthropist Anne Melvin, educator Judy Shafer and artist and Junctionview Studios member Mike Reed will receive awards for their support of the arts at the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s Community Arts Partnership awards, GCAC announced today.

    Melvin will receive the Arts Partner award for her lifetime support of the arts, including the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, which nominated her. Shafer, Director of Jazz in Schools for the Jazz Arts Group, will receive the Arts Educator award for her work to educate local children through the arts, and Reed will receive the Emerging Arts Leader award for his work as an artist and with Junctionview.

    GCAC’s annual Community Arts Partnership awards, formerly the Business Arts Partnership awards, honor the Columbus community for its active support of central Ohio’s artists and arts organizations. On Fri., Mar. 6, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at COSI Columbus, 333 W. Broad St., GCAC will host civic and corporate leaders for a luncheon and presentation of the 2009 awards.

    Each year, GCAC solicits nominations from artists, arts organizations, businesses and community members in six categories: Arts Partner, Arts Educator, Emerging Arts Leader, Small Business (up to 50 employees), Medium Business (51-500 employees) and Large Business (over 500 employees).

    Winners of the Small, Medium and Large Business categories will be announced at the event. Nominees are:

    Large Businesses (Over 500 employees)
    – Battelle Institute, nominated by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra
    – Grange Insurance, nominated by Chamber Music Columbus
    – JPMorgan Chase, nominated by Thurber House and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra
    – Nationwide, nominated by the Wexner Center for the Arts
    – State Farm Insurance, nominated by The Asian Festival

    Medium Businesses (51-500 employees)
    – Oakland Nursery, nominated by Otterbein College Department of Dance and Theatre
    – SBC Advertising, nominated by Six Strings Concerts, Inc.
    – The Westin Great Southern Hotel, nominated by Thurber House

    Small Businesses (1-50 employees)
    – Brainstorm Media, nominated by ProMusica Chamber Orchestra
    – ChopChop Gallery, nominated by Kim Glover
    – Columbus Radio Group, nominated by The King Arts Complex
    – Fahlgren Mortine, nominated by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra
    – Formation Studio, nominated by the Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus
    – Hayley Gallery, nominated by Barbara Allen Frost and Todd Camp Studios
    – Morse Family Dental Group, nominated by The King Arts Complex
    – Orange Barrel Media, nominated by the Wexner Center for the Arts
    – The Brunner Firm Co., Inc., nominated by ArtSafe
    – Today’s Child Learning Center, nominated by The Asian Festival
    – Watkins Printing, nominated by Ohio Designer Craftsmen

    Advance registration is required to attend the Community Arts Partnership awards. Tickets are $100, or $75 price for nonprofit employees. The deadline to register is Fri., Feb. 27.     In addition to the Community Arts Partnership awards, GCAC will present the Artistic Excellence Award, given annually to an arts organization that has demonstrated innovation, risk and artistic excellence in a performance, exhibition or program. The winner of the Artistic Excellence Award will receive $10,000.

    This year’s nominees are:
    – The Columbus Museum of Art for Objects of Wonder from the Ohio State University
    – Columbus Dance Theatre for New York Preview
    – MadLab Theatre for The Angels of Lemnos
    – The Ohio State University College of the Arts for the opening of the OSU Urban Arts Space, including the Midnight Robbers: The Artists of Notting Hill Carnival exhibition
    – The Short North Business Association for Art al Fresco

    Each year, GCAC staff selects Artistic Excellence nominees, and GCAC’s Board of Trustees meets just prior to the Community Arts Partnership awards luncheon to select a winner.
