One of the first things the Gateway Film Center programmed when it reopened was a retrospective highlighting the work of filmmaker Chloe Zhao. That program included not only her three features, but her shorts as well. Martin Scorsese’s filmography is tougher to fit into a weekend, which might explain Mondays with Marty, a weekly check in on one of Scorsese’s films.

GFC continues showcasing the work of cinema’s most influential and remarkable voices this week. Friday, September 3 brings their new program, The World of Wong Kar Wai.

“Filmmaker retrospectives are core to our programming strategy and the mission of the Film Center,” explains GFC programmer and president Chris Hamel. “We spend a lot of time deciding who, when, and how to present these retrospectives. Generally speaking, I wish we could do more of them because they celebrate filmmakers and diversity and create conversations for our community.”

Why Wong Kar Wai?

“I was legitimately giddy to discover that many of his films were being restored in 2020,” Hamel says. “It was really a matter of how soon we could bring these to the city and present them to our audience.”

The filmmaker, who hasn’t released a feature since 2013, is known for its visual opulence, romantic leanings and gorgeous soundtracks. Hamel is eager to share these films with Columbus.

In the Mood for Love is one of my favorite films of the 2000s,” he says. “I hope anyone who has not seen the film will make sure they do so when it screens at the Film Center.”

The program runs through Thursday, September 9.

“Programs such as this make the Film Center’s membership program a no-brainer,” says Hamel. “Patrons who wish to see all the films should consider becoming a member now.”
