The Johnstone Fund for New Music will host its second free contemporary classical music concert at Goodale Park’s Shelter House on Wednesday, November 3 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. With widely differing musical styles and instrumental combinations, “New Music In Goodale Park” will feature Carpe Diem String Quartet and the OSU New Music Collective. The program includes Terry Riley’s Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector for string quartet; Christian Lauba’s Ars for two soprano saxophones; Hands by Korine Fujiwara for string quartet; Gabriela Frank’s Andean Walk About for string quartet; Physical Property by Steven Mackey for string quartet and electric guitar; Luciano Berio’s O King for voice, violin, cello, clarinet, and piano; and White Man Sleeps by Kevin Volans for string quartet.
Among the composers are a Tunisian-born Frenchman, a South African educated in Scotland and Germany, an American guitarist born in Germany, a Californian with Peruvian and Chinese ancestry, a Montana fiddler with Japanese roots, the founder of American minimalist music, and an Italian virtuoso who memorialized Martin Luther King.
“We want to keep our performances fresh, new, and fun,” said Jack Johnstone, Co-Founder of the Johnstone Fund for New Music. “This is about fostering the creative process and giving the gift of New Music to the community.”
A meet and greet with the musicians and free cupcakes from Surly Girl Saloon will follow the concert. Limited parking is available outside of the Shelter House and metered parking is available along the perimeters of Goodale Park.
