At this week’s busy Italian Village Commission, one smaller development was approved after multiple previous rounds of architectural revisions and redesigns. A four-unit townhome building developed by Lykens Companies is slated to fill in an empty lot on Detroit Avenue, behind the St. James Tavern. The development will directly face another from Lykens right across the street with the renovation and expansion of the former E.J. Thomas building into 31 apartment units.
“This building, and the other across the street, have come a long way from the beginning,” said commission member Jason Sudy. “I think you guys got it there.”
Architect Karrick Sherrill from Shremshock Architects presented the revised project to the commission, noting that while the area contains many single family homes, there are also multi-family buildings nearby, setting the precedent for a similar building to be constructed here at the corner of Detroit and Hamlet.
“The building to the west is eight-units and the one to east is three units,” he stated. “Looking at how Detroit was layed out, not only with modern development but also with historic development, we wanted to make case for this use being appropriate for this site.”
Outside of a few notes about window details, the other commissioners had no major objections and voted to approve the project for development.
