Go to the very back of Lowe’s and look for remnant rugs and clearance rugs. They’re a little spread throughout the store, so you might have to ask an employee for help. I’ve found great rugs that way, from $15 to $100. Sorry, don’t know of any local/non-chain rug businesses who sell things on the cheap or I’d of course tell you to support them!
The “Surprise Party Reversi” has always been a dream of mine.
How it would work: tell your friends that you are having a surprise party for your roommate. Invite them over to wait for your roommate to come through the door at 9 pm. At 8:59, you tell them to get ready because roommie is coming to the front door now. Everybody hushes. The lights are off. You count. 5… 4… 3… 2…
But then, in an unexpected twist, your roommate jumps out of the closet with a sparkler or flashlight or kazoo and shouts SURPRISE! Everybody is really confused for a minute, then they realize the joke’s on them. You all drink sangria punch and play Twister or have a cupcake decorating contest. Pictures are taken, music is played, perhaps an ill-advised makeout session or two take place. But all in all, everybody goes home drunk and happy.
I DK, it’s just an idea.
You are all awesome for giving so many recommendations. Thanks! Now I have plenty of things to stay busy with through summer. To add to the pile, I found a washboard company in Logan that does an annual festival: http://www.columbuswashboard.com/ …apparently the only washboard made in the USA. Who knew? I would love to buy about 5 of those things and tie them together to make a headboard.
The New Yorker recently published an outstanding article on DFW:
D. T. Max gives a cohesive if limited picture of DFW’s life and work. The article, along with the “Ask the Author” follow-up, answers many of the questions that may still haunt anybody struggling to make sense of his death and/or writing. An excellent, excellent piece.
As a warning, this article contains some plot spoilers. If, like me, you are still working through Infinite Jest then you should know that the “ending” is revealed – for whatever that’s worth in a DFW novel :)
