You know I honestly don’t think Trump is a racist at all. I think he’s perfectly willing to lie to the KKK to sucker their votes and then tell them to jump in a lake once he’s elected. He’s a classic capitalist. I *am* less sure about his Islamophobia, tho.

You think he’s not racist – based on what? Fred Trump was certainly a racist slumlord. The Trump Organization was sued by the DOJ for housing discrimination in the 70s when Donald was working for the company.

When has Donald ever done anything to indicate he’s *not* racist? Because his actions and statements over the years signal the opposite.

    Andrew Ti puts it well:

People write to me all the time telling me that X or Y question on here is just me being taken in by a “troll,” someone who’s just saying racist stuff to get a reaction, but who “doesn’t really believe it.” I think that’s a major component in what’s wrong with a lot of racists and people who enable them: they think that there’s some kind of magical need for intent to be part of the equation, that one can’t simply be judged on your actions, or the effects of your speech.

Whether or not Trump “believes” what he’s saying, he’s empowering racists with his speech, who now believe they have a voice and a place in this country. And this gives them the courage and the community to perpetrate their racist acts (just look how they acted only yesterday).

Moreover, think about how racist you have to be to believe that using racist rhetoric to appeal to racists is OK, like you can play with racism because it’s just another tactic. Racism is a threat, to groups of people, and to simply think that you can make this threat, hurt people, and benefit from it, and that that requires some kind of intent or active malice in your heart makes you a fucking awful person. They seem to think “I just don’t give a shit about my racist actions” is some kind of defense.

If you’re some idiot who thinks that Trump is just using the odious tool of racism to get votes, what about him makes you think that even if he doesn’t “believe” in it, he’ll act anything other than exactly as he’s been campaigning (relative weakness of the Presidency in our system aside). You think he’s not going to govern as a fucking racist, sexist bigot? Why wouldn’t he?

The additional irony in this case is that the racists who love Trump always list the fact that he “speaks his mind” as one of the reasons they support him.

I hate to play the “finger-on-the-button-card”, but the US has a military larger than the next seven countries put together and enough nukes to kill the world several times over.

Trump is a thin-skinned, hair-trigger asshole who once sued Bill Maher for calling him the son of a baboon.

Does anyone feel good with that combination?

There is no safe way to get to Grandview Yard via foot or bicycle from the East.

Why is not safe by bike? There are no bike lanes/sharrows/etc., but it doesn’t seem any more dangerous than any other road without those bike features.

The holier-than-thou suburbanite stereotype does not look good on anyone.

You and I will just have to agree to disagree. Those options you describe sound very much like a gamble to me, and when you are talking about schools the currency is the education of our children.

My hats off to you for fighting the good fight. But like I said, I’ll take the sure thing every time.

Even Columbus City Schools seems to be trending upwards now with respectable and inspiring new leadership after a period of scandal, turmoil and embarrassment.

The phrase “trending upwards” devoid of context is all but meaningless. Its like when a fledgling company says it doubled sales, but in reality sold one widget last year and two this year. When you have a school system in such dire straits as CSC, you can point to any positive change and say, “hey, look, we’re trending upwards!”

What’s the number one reason we bought a house in Grandview? The good CSC schools are based on a lottery. A lottery! Some people are willing to gamble with their children’s future (or have no choice due to economics etc.), but some people are willing and able to pay more for a sure thing.

    Hence, Grandview.

Municipal consolidation would be a formal acknowledgement that the benefits enjoyed by separately incorporated suburbs are only made possible by their proximity to and dependency on the central city, are derived at its expense, and are therefore unjust.

Obviously it’s not economically advantageous for you, however, there are a moral and ethical arguments about how we want to take care of our neighbors grow our society that you, personally, may or may not care about, but others may and may express that at the ballot box. That’s all I’m saying.

I get that its CU-gospel that suburbs suck, and sure, fine, in a lot of ways they do, but when it becomes a moral argument that suburbs’ very existence is somehow wrong or unjust, you’ve lost me. That’s just absurd. Give me a break.

As I said, the city of Grandview Heights probably isn’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future. That doesn’t mean that something else couldn’t be better suited to supporting the people who live within the greater Grandview/5xNW community.

What I’m hearing you say is it would be better for people who live outside Grandview if Grandview joined Columbus.

As a Grandview resident, sell me on why we should join Columbus. What’s in it for us? I get the economies of scale argument, but that aside, you can’t argue with results. We have great schools, great services (curb-side recycling years before Columbus, by the way), strong property values, a walkable neighborhood, great parks, even one of the best libraries in the country for a community our size. How does any of that improve for Grandview residents if we join Columbus?

Grandview Heights was founded in 1906. It pre-dates the “white flight” phenomenon by at least half a century. And, to my knowledge, homes in Grandview were never subject to racially restrictive covenants like those in UA, for example.
