My roommate just opened her mail to find she was caught by the red light camera at 5th and Northwest. It kind of stinks because she really has no memory of it (and very little chance to fight it). Something about the delay is unsettling. From what I understand that is one lucrative camera.
If you’ve ever been to Greece, you know that the Greeks do not fry fish in a batter, they pretty much ignore potatoes, and the idea of “Greek cole slaw” they would consider to be an invasion from the Germans. And don’t get an older Greek started on the qualities and habits of the Germans or their culture.
I had a greek great grandma who lived to be 100. She forgot a lot of things but not one ounce of hatred for the Germans. The stories were truly awful. People literally starved to death in the streets of Athens.
And I thought the private sector does everything better. Oh well, at least there’s some money to be made.
One of my indulgences are the celebrity gossip sites. Here is Leo on a citibike albeit while also on the phone. At least he wasn’t texting.
I wanted to add that the free, easy parking is a HUGE plus. A bunch of my friends have joined downtown and SN gyms only to learn that having to find and/or pay for parking was a big excuse to blow off a workout.
Aren’t there productivity aids that account for a lot of that increase? Computers, telecommunications, various new machines and techniques, etc. The ‘office girls’ in Madmen might not have been as productive, but they were hindered by Olivetti’s and Selectrics and a narrow career path. We have been mixing Frederick Taylor with technology for a century we are bound to get better at it. Unfortunately the machine in the garden discriminates on who it pays.
I belong. It is kind of the walmart of gyms. I tend to go, do my thing and get out. The price is great.
There are problems.
The machines get wonky – not totally broken but not working correctly and they don’t get fixed. This happens regardless of how many times you mention it or even leave notes.
The tv’s are getting old and a good majority no longer make good contact with the headphones. Nothing will probably ever be done about this.
Other than spinning the classes are limited.
The place gets really crowded before and after work. That is to be expected.
It is a bit of a meat market. I always feel I am being watched going up and down the center staircase. I have been hit on many times, a couple pretty inappropriately. It is a gym, not a bar.
It does get dirty. If you have a weak immune system, go early in the day. There are paper towels and sprays so I clean my own equipment.
More of a pet peeve, Urban Active used to have free wi-fi (ie watch netflix on your phone while doing cardio). LA Fitness took it out.
Stay away from the personal training at LA Fitness and avoid extras. I am on a prepaid plan to avoid any shenanigans.
cheap, tons of equipment, cardio theater, a pool, child care, free easy parking, good hours. Those are pretty good specs and mixed with the price it keeps me a member.
I thought it was pretty good pizza in a terrible location.
That may have been the only pizza joint in Grandview city limits too.
LOL – Since Pharoah’s closed years ago, I think you might be right.
^ I think there is a disconnect for several reasons. One is that they associate these circulators with fun and two that they hope this will be free. I sure as hell would want that going by my door.
I didn’t even know what Woot was until now, so I’m about to get drunk and do this.
It is a slippery slope. Next thing you know and you’ll be planking. ;)
I would be afraid to get mixed up in this one. The opposition seems to be made up of some crazy religious zealots. Of note is a recent article I read about truck drivers being stopped and killed if they didn’t know the correct number of kneelings to at different times of the day.
Meh, its 7/10 of a mile between Buttles and Fifth…and I’d actually like to see people walk it.
Saying it and expecting out of town people to just do it are different things. My feeling is people will just stay planted near where they are dropped off and feel comfortable about getting back on the loop.
The other advantage is that this will help the parking issues in the SN and get people ‘circulating’ ;) instead of hanging out near where they parked their car.
I think they would be crazy not to include the SN up to Fifth Ave. The SN would be the highlight of a visit and this would be great for those businesses.
Mama Cozzi! i have to admit having my share when I lived in the Hilltop. :)
Candy Crush on my phone! :)
