Re: I use this road and I never see a bike

If you’ve used the road in the last few days on Summit/4th, you may have noticed that there were bike tracks left behind in the snow… but you know, no one EVER uses them…

Very much a work in progress to say the least, but I am making a Google Map of all of the Columbus metro’s biking infrastructure. Most of the current maps are either outdated or only include individual cities, so I am making one to include all areas for both current and future conditions.

Hate to tell you, but seems like you’ve wasted your time:

MORPC Columbus Metro Bike User Map (existing facilities only, interactive online version is routinely updated):

MORPC Regional Bikeways Map (includes existing/committed/proposed facilities):

Routinely updated doesn’t appear to be exactly true, despite what it says on the site. The first map is what I initially looked at because I was looking for metro biking infrastructure for a thread on another site. Once I started digging through Google Maps, I found numerous instances where it was totally outdated, and by at least a year according to time stamps. I guess it depends on what time frame they consider routine.

Also, the map uses a single color for all types of biking infrastructure, which I find kind of annoying. One color is fine if it’s all the exact same thing, but there is a difference between protected bike lanes, striped lanes or sharrows. I also wanted to include pedestrian infrastructure construction like sidewalks, considering so much of the Columbus area lacks them and they are an important part of increasing the city’s walkability.

Finally, I wanted to do a layered map with both the existing conditions and what is planned, so that the entire potential system could be seen all at once. The maps above don’t do that, either. Nor does the metro plan really help. It is so vague and gives no timeframe and no information on what kind of infrastructure is planned/proposed. Are we talking 2018 or 2035? Sharrows or multi use paths? I would rather stick to what has been proposed in detail, especially if there are actual construction plans.

So yes, while there are some maps out there, I see them as lacking. Whether I am wasting my time or not is really up for me to decide. I’m sure a lot of the work I do for my site could be considered a waste.

Your site is a great resource and keep up the good work.

(also keep up the good fight against you-know-who-in-Minneapolis on CityData lol ).

Thanks. That’s who I am referencing when I was talking about finding the map for a thread.
