    Just woke up to this…

Pics of the flames look crazy.

Not knowing what that train was carrying, I’d probably be staying indoors for awhile…

(How long do you suppose until this thread gets derailed this morning?)

WBNS finally has live coverage on TV. I’m in the evac zone, but I’m staying put for now. They’re saying 1 mile radius, we’re .5 away. Choppers outside…

Looks like it could be sulfur, which could be bad – especially for children who might breath it in.

Train Derails, Hazmat Called To Scene

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Hazmat crews are on the scene of a fire that started when a train with several tankers derailed in north Columbus.

According to Columbus Police, the tankers were possibly carrying sulfur, although that has not been confirmed. The train derailed on the tracks near North Grant Avenue and East 11th Avenue, but it’s not clear what caused the train to go off the tracks

Yeah, someone who lives nearby posted elsewhere that the smell was extremely foul…

All the more reason to split the area for awhile.

(edit: also just read that someone overheard on a scanner that is could possibly be ethanol/alcohol)

Yeah, you don’t want to mess around with burning chemicals.

Yeah, live shots from 10TV just now show it’s still burning pretty good.
Still pretty dark out, so telling exactly how bad the derailment is isn’t perfect yet, but what I saw looked awful. Supposedly only 5-6 cars, but looks ugly. Heard no one was hurt, so thats a plus.

Last I heard was something to do with cars being Shell Chemicals and reports are the chemical cars are denatured alcohol (on fire) and styrene(not on fire).

Rough morning to be a firefighter.

COTA will be running a limited Sunday schedule for the morning commute.

It is being reported that due to fire and evacution COTA will not be running half of its buses for the morning commute as 140 buses are in the COTA garage near the fire on Fields Ave. They will be running buses on a limited Sunday schedule instead.

Ethanol wouldn’t smell foul when burning; it could be styrene which is nasty stuff.

Yep, ethanol is pretty clean burning. And would make sense that with any source of ignition it would immediately cause a huge conflagration.
Styrene could be the reason the hazmat gang is there. It’s already hazardous without being on fire. Strong dermal and respiratory tract ittitant; possible carcinogen; crosses placental barrier. Normal reference for this info is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

The boom and subsequent glow from the fireball were visible in Grandview and lit the sky up briefly.
