So yes, the film has some of the conventional elements of a love-triangle. But what’s truly startling about the movie, then, is its implicit politics: Ordinary folks are good, government is bad–really bad. There are no evil corporations in this movie; the bad guys are bureaucrats and TV hosts.

Taken literally, Hunger Games is a black-helicopter-ish portrayal of state power. But taken figuratively, the film is an Anthem (novella) for our time, a well-crafted cry from the heart against top-down injustice and oppression. Nobody has made a rallying-cry of a movie that’s this effective in a long, long time.

The murderers, then, come off as mere pawns in the Games, and even their chief manipulator, head Gamemaker Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley), can’t be blamed—he’s punished for cutting them too much slack. President Snow, Donald Sutherland’s smugly detached autocrat, ostensibly calls the shots, but his involvement is too opaque to feel especially threatening. The real culprit, you get the sense, is the system, in which a small minority—1 percent, let’s say?—ostentatiously oppresses a vast majority. Sound familiar?

I’m not really planning on seeing this film… but really interested in how it compares to Battle Royale:

My SO dragged me to the Grandview Highschool ‘cakewalk’ yesterday (long story)…in the children’s division they had multiple cakes with a ‘hunger games’ theme. Most looking like this:

there has to be some irony…

And aside from “Battle Royale” in 2000, there was “Series 7: The Contenders” from 2001

This movie was a 2.5 hour steaming pile of boring turd.

They couldn’t make it a 1.5 hour streaming pile of turd? Bummer.
