Here is a hilarious (and pretty cool) bracket at 11 Warriors to determine the Greatest Ohioan. We’ll see in a few weeks who the winner is.

Anyone willing to cast any predictions?

How about Rockefeller for business, Hope for arts, Owens for sports and Grant for politics?

And with 11 Warriors being a sports-centric site, I’d say Owens for the overall win.

I’d swap Marge Schott for George Steinbrenner because the list could use a villain and she is certainly more associated with Ohio. Also, the Yankees suck.

The list overall is pretty light on women.

Woody Hayes? Does anyone in Cincinnati or Cleveland or Toledo or Dayton care about him? Because it says greatest Ohioan, not greatest OSU coach. ;)

    Edison, Spielberg, Owens, Grant

Honorable mention: Bill Watterson (arts), Jerrie Mock (not sure if she belongs in a category, but thought her accomplishment was worth mentioning)

Well there are very few (none even?) who would be the top 16 Ohioans in Sports and very few in Politics & Military.

Based on the site, I think Archie Griffin (11 seed) could make it to the final 4.

Also, Grant is usually included in the list of worst Presidents…in fact, Ohio is the home of mediocre Presidents.

If we really were going to go for a football coach Paul Brown would probably be the most likely choice. He’s basically the inventor of modern football including many different formations, hand signals on the sidelines, radio communication in helmets, use of gamefilm, modern facemasks, etc. He was also a primary in integrating the NFL. Not to mention the amount of championships he won at Massillon who was known as the best high school team in the country for decades,a national championship with ohio state, the founding of the Cleveland browns who also were arguably the most dominating pro football team of its time, and the founding of the Cincinnati Bengals. Most people also don’t realize that Brown was integral in the merger of the AFL and the NFL.

There’s certainly not much love in Cleveland for Columbus as a city, but Clevelanders DO really love Ohio State, particularly Ohio State Football. That may be in part because OSU has one of the few widely recognizable AND successful sports programs that Cleveland can legitimately stake out a claim to since OSU is the state flagship and thus “every Ohioan’s university”.

It also helps that Cleveland doesn’t have an established public collegiate football program of its own at Cleveland State University, something the university has been considering staring up for years but hasn’t actually acted on yet, and perhaps never will.

Feelings on OSU are more mixed in parts of the state where there are already established and fairly successful programs, or other major programs close by. Toledo for instance doesn’t seem to be so much into OSU, with its own established program and “That School Up North” closer than OSU. Cincinnati and Youngstown have each contributed successful football coaches, but otherwise seem more interested in what’s going on in their own backyards. Cincy in particular has a massive chip on its shoulder when it comes to OSU. They resent being so often overlooked as the #2 school in Ohio State’s shadow.

Honestly, my first thought for greatest Ohioan wasn’t even about football. I was thinking John Glenn as the first American in space and more recently the oldest.
