I called 911 on one of those guys a couple of weeks ago for menacing a woman. Street Speech will tell you to check and see if they are one of theirs. They don’t seem to do much about the problems or be proactive by checking up on their people.

Not to continue to further derail (there’s a thread on Street Speech over here) but I reported one of their vendors after I spotted him urinating in the doorway of a vacant storefront in broad daylight near the spot where he vends. He wasn’t on the corner the next week, and was absent for at least a month or two. He’s back on the same corner again. Not sure if any action was taken, but I haven’t seen him peeing in public since. ;)

Just to derail this thread even further, Walker, if you ever visit the US Virgin Islands, do not be surprised (and do not bother reporting to the police) if you see a man urinate in public. It was amazing how shameless the men down there could be.

Back on topic, I am going out for a walk now. I will see if there is anything to report.

Just looked out the window from the 23rd floor while waiting for the lift. Looks like the police tape is down and traffic is moving through the intersection.

Gay Street is open. 3rd Street is mostly open; they have 2 lanes blocked off for a fire truck that is hiding down the street and sidewalk.

This is terribly frightening for all the people who commute to the downtown area early and are walking on the street that time of the morning.

I’d hope you’d feel free to discuss events honestly without worrying about making downtown look bad.

Just the way it reads is “I was assaulted and I’d like to share my experience, but not if it makes people here uncomfortable about downtown”, which is crap. Ignoring events because they might make some people uncomfortable doesn’t help anyone.

Sorry. Take it easy on me – that was rough yesterday.

Was going for more “feel free to speak your mind” than criticism.

    Understand the sentiment, though.

As a relatively new live/work citizen of downtown, this morning’s events certainly give me an uneasy feeling. This is particularly disturbing since it occurred just a block away from the incident earlier this year at Miami-Jacobs College.

I couldn’t sleep last night and headed into my office at Gay and 3rd around 6:45 AM and came upon the scene already secured by CPD. I am just glad I decided to eat breakfast before I left for the office or I could have walked right into the event as it was happening.

Media Alert: Safety Experts On Hand at Capital Crossroads SID

Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District provides safety escorts, as well as safety and crime prevention information. Downtown employees and residents can call the Capital Crossroads SID customer service hotline at 228-5718 to request a safety escort or report concerning or suspicious behavior.

“Anytime there is a homicide, it is tragic,” said Lisa Defendiefer, Capital Crossroads SID Deputy Director of Operations and Advocacy. “But we want people to know that violent crime is rare downtown, and 2005 was the last time there was a homicide.”

Defendiefer said that from January to July 31, out of a total of 489 crime incidents, 16 (3 percent) were classified as robberies in 2012 in the SID’s 38-square block area.

“After something like this happens, it is understandable that people are apprehensive,” said Defendiefer. “The SID is here to help. Our ambassadors provide safety escorts with just a quick phone call to our customer service line, and we encourage people to use this service.”

Defendiefer has been intricately involved in downtown safety and crime prevention with Capital Crossroads SID for more than 10 years.

Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District operates a real-time security network with downtown security personnel under the leadership of Defendiefer.

Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District covers a 38-square block area in the core of downtown Columbus. Funded by assessments from more than 500 properties and voluntary contributions, Capital Crossroads SID supports the development of downtown Columbus as a safe, clean, and fun place to live, work and play.

I will feel safer after they figure out what happened. For some reason that it happened at 6:00am at 3rd and Gay is disconcerting.

This amazed me. 7 years without a homicide downtown?

It seems that the attempted homicides don’t count.

But I wonder, if that is just the 38 block area, or what part of they consider downtown.

From Columbus Police’s web page, all homicides between March 6 and September 6
Unfortunately, I can’t make it bigger in this window.

    Why stop there?

Let’s make murder illegal. That should stop it.
