All other charters should get random spot-checks. This is a terrible misuse of funds and even worse, a terrible waste of the children’s potential.

A former businessman who duped Columbus and South-Western city schools out of $120,000 in tutoring payments pleaded guilty today in federal court.

Ashkir Ali, 46, faces a two-year mandatory prison term and as many as five additional years in prison for his scheme.

He pleaded guilty to falsifying invoices and to stealing student identities and listing them on invoices.

Only if you do the same to the public schools … and shutter them, too, if they’re found to be just as bad.

The fact that charters actually fold when they fail is a feature, not a bug. Conversely, the fact that public schools can fail and fail and fail without being subject to any appreciable consequence (and often get *increases* in funding based on the apparently unkillable idea that failure at any level of funding simply means that funding was inadequate).

Why shouldn’t charters be randomly spot checked, irrespective of whether public schools are (not that they shouldn’t be as well)?

My question is how long did the issues go on before they were addressed?

For the same reason you probably wouldn’t do it in public schools, either. It could be disruptive and distracting from the core mission.

A legitimate question, particularly if you’re one of the parents.
