I figured this deserved its own thread.

So, you guys might remember that back in December city council objected to the renewal of the liquor license for the Saveway Mart on Summit and Third in Italian Village, leading many to speculate that they would eventually lose their license.

Well, that day has finally come. I popped in last night and they have no alcohol whatsoever in the store. In fact, they even have a charming handwritten sign that reads, “No beer, so don’t even ask for that shit”. Lovely.

While the guys that work at this place are usually pretty friendly, the store itself is a wreck. Now that they don’t have alcohol, rendering half the store empty, it now more than ever resembles a bombed out air raid shelter more than a local bodega.

Please, someone buy this place, fix it up, and bring something valuable to Italian Village residents.

I half-jokingly asked the owner of Dairy Family on 5th Ave, in Victorian Village to buy it, as he’s done wonders with that place, but he seemed less than enthusiastic about the prospect.

Anyway, I basically just wanted to let everyone know that they’re banned from selling alcohol for a year. Cheers!

Those guys were always nice to me and I feel bad for them now. Apparently, they lost their license because it is a high crime rate area. That isn’t their fault! One less convenient place to get alcohol. Gee, now I can go to the super classy UDF and get mugged!

They also had multiple code violations and multiple sales to minors. It’s not so much that it’s a high crime rate area, it’s that their store has had multiple assaults, 911 calls, etc.

You could make the case that the various assaults and whatnot is not their fault, but the fact that their store looks like garbage doesn’t help.

You can view the liquor permit objection document here:

I don’t know what it used to be like, but if selling crack pipes and stinking like BO is a step up it must have been a real dive before.

Have never been in it, but how is that place at the corner of 5th and Summit? It used to be ‘cellular planet’ lol, but now is a convenience store.

Never been a fan of that UDF on High St. There is always the Beer Barn on 4th, but they also are in need of fixing that place up considering they got $1 million from Kroger.

As someone who lives nearby, good riddance!

We lived close to the Dairy Family in our old location and were greatly spoiled both by the friendliness of the owners and massive beer selection that easily rivals Viking.
When we moved to IV the Saveway became our corner store and I was shocked at the contrast. One of the first times my husband stopped by the store he said someone tried to rob the place and the guy behind the counter pulled out a gun and chased the robber off (in broad daylight). Personally, I’ve only been in twice and I agree with the whole bomb shelter vibe. Between the poured cement floor that gives you the impression someone just built a shack on an empty lot, and the dusty beer in the case, the store doesn’t hold much appeal for me.
It was ok in a pinch if you ran out of mixers during a party, but I’d rather spend the extra few minutes going to the Beer Barn.

The owners are great people, their beer selection is fantastic, and their wine selection is good for a corner store. They also take care of the place.

I’ll give you that the people are always friendly, and the beer selection is pretty sweet.

but why does it always stink?!?

That Saveway is a throwback to the areas grittier days. The owners are friendly and I hope they can fix the issues. Though I am sure beer and cigarettes are 90% of their sales.

I just wish they took better care of the place. They don’t seem to take any pride in the store, which is a shame.

I haven’t been in it either but I believe it’s owned by the same people who own Saveway, so hard to tell how that will end up. I live about a block from the Saveway (in our ‘hood, it has many nicknames; most are un-PC) and while the staff has always been great to me, and the store has saved many a party if we needed beer or ice, it is pretty gross in there.

it was totally their fault for selling to every 16-year old from Grandview that walked in there. the crime stats were because of the mart.

it was incredibly convenient for beer, but to make them out as victims is just ridiculous. they created the situation!

the good news is they now have 2 games of skill booths and a quality selection of second-hand porn dvds in the old wine case. so they’re figuring out some great ways to use the space.
