    Environment Ohio criticizes FirstEnergy in its annual clean energy report card

    The PSEG Wyandot Solar Farm in Upper Sandusky straddles the Wyandot County Airport. Its 159,200 solar panels sit on 80 acres of county-owned land and generate 12 million watts. The power goes into a nearby American Electric Power substation and is then distributed to customers throughout the county. AEP has signed a 20-year contract with PSEG to purchase the power. The greening of Ohio is well under way, and consumers can expect to see more wind turbines and solar arrays as well as utility-sponsored energy efficiency projects, says one of the state’s environmental advocacy groups.

    Obama administration, 5 states reach deal to quicken approval of wind farms in Great Lakes

    TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The Obama administration and five states announced an agreement Friday to speed up consideration of plans for offshore wind farms in the Great Lakes, which have been delayed by cost concerns and public opposition.

    Under the deal, state and federal agencies will craft a blueprint for speeding regulatory review of proposed wind farms without sacrificing environmental and safety standards. The Great Lakes have no offshore wind turbines, although a Cleveland partnership announced plans last year for a demonstration project that would place five to seven turbines in Lake Erie about 7 miles north of the city, generating 20-30 megawatts of electricity.

    Siemens Energy interested in Lake Erie wind turbine project

    The development company formed to build a pilot wind farm in Lake Erie is switching to smaller, more efficient turbines, a move that could make the project more practical. The idea is to whittle down the construction cost in order to produce electricity that can be sold to utilities at a price closer to wholesale prices — or at least closer to price of power from land-based wind turbines, said Lorry Wagner, president of the nonprofit Lake Erie Energy Development Corp., or LEEDCo.

    Solar Power Amping Up In Central Ohio

    In the past two years, the price of solar panels has dropped dramatically. In Ohio, the industry is creating jobs and helping boost our economy in a big way. And the growth is just beginning. Dave Cohen from Dovetail Solar said, “Ohio’s, actually, surprisingly, been one of the most active solar markets in the last five years.”

    Ohio gets high marks for clean jobs projects

    A national business organization that promotes clean energy jobs ranks Ohio No. 6 on a list of planned clean jobs for the second quarter of 2012. Four projects, including General Electric’s research and development center in Dayton, were mentioned in the report and eventually could create more than 700 jobs.

    Ohio State to power campus with wind energy from Ohio wind farm

    COLUMBUS – The Ohio State University today announced it has signed a letter of intent with Iberdrola Renewables to purchase 50 megawatts (MW) of wind energy capacity from the Blue Creek Wind Farm, located in Van Wert and Paulding counties in Ohio. The purchase of clean, renewable wind energy capacity equates to approximately 25 percent of the entire Columbus campus electricity load, and is one of the single largest purchases of actual renewable energy by any university in the country.

    The agreement helps Ohio State take a big step toward becoming a “carbon neutral university,” a commitment the university has been working toward since President Gee signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment in 2008. The university continues to develop and implement plans to achieve its sustainability goals, including the creation of a campus culture that embraces sustainability.

    “Our partnership with Iberdrola Renewables and Blue Creek Wind Farm underscores our long-held commitment to sustainability and to the economic future of our state,” said Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee. “Together, we will make Ohio State a national leader in sustainability, while investing in renewable energy produced right here in Ohio.”

    In addition to being one of the largest North American wind purchases by a non-utility purchaser, the 20-year purchase agreement will also create new opportunities for research between Ohio State and Iberdrola Renewables.

    “This commitment to wind energy is a great example of Ohio State’s leadership in sustainability issues,” said Ron Sega, vice president and enterprise executive for energy and environment. “In addition to supporting renewable energy, this is a reflection on how Ohio State is integrating research and academics into our campus operations.”

    “The leadership demonstrated by Ohio State in this commitment to purchase clean, Ohio-grown renewable wind energy is notable because it is voluntary, and demonstrates a commitment to carbon neutrality,” said Barrett Stambler, vice president of origination for Iberdrola Renewables. “This is the largest university purchase of wind power in our company’s history, and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership.”

    The wind energy purchase will result in a significant improvement in Ohio State’s carbon footprint, and underscores the university’s leadership in advancing the development and use of sustainable energy. In addition, it helps Ohio State diversify its energy portfolio, and it allows university energy experts to prepare for the future by knowing the cost of this electricity resource for the next 20 years. This enables university officials to better prepare for changes in the energy sector as well as long-term planning.

    This agreement with Iberdrola could not be possible without assistance and collaboration with AEP Energy for the electricity transmission. AEP Energy will deliver the electricity from the Blue Creek Wind Farm to Ohio State.

    In addition to the delivery of energy to Ohio State, this partnership with Blue Creek Wind Farm contributes to Ohio State’s “Campus as a Test Bed” effort to provide research opportunities and industry linkages for Ohio State faculty and students. Benefits associated with this partnership include access to important research data from the wind farm for use by a variety of multi-disciplinary research projects.

    Logan County’s first industrial wind turbines should be up and running this year outside Honda Transmission Manufacturing of America Inc.’s Russells Point plant, making it the first major U.S. automotive manufacturing facility to obtain a substantial amount of its electricity directly from wind turbines located on the same property.

    Wind turbines will help OSU save on energy costs

    Ohio State University officials say they expect to save $1 million in energy costs this year thanks to wind turbines in northwest Ohio. The university in Columbus signed a 20-year agreement last fall to buy 50 megawatts of power annually generated by spinning wind turbines at Blue Creek Wind Farm. It’s the state largest commercial wind farm, with 152 turbines in Van Wert and Paulding counties.

    Ohio Contributes To 110,000 New Clean Energy Jobs

    A new report out this week says Ohio contributed to the more than 110,000 clean energy jobs created in the U.S. in 2012. The report from Environmental Entrepreneurs—or E2—shows that Ohio companies contributed nearly 800 new jobs in the clean energy sector. That includes everything from erecting solar panels, operating wind turbines, and helping people reduce their energy use.
