When Phillip’s Coney Island, the Short North dining institution, abruptly closed last year, locals wondered what would fill the vacancy at 747 North High Street. But now a new black-and-white sign is up in the window stating “PhilCo Bar & Diner Coming Soon”.June 15, 2013 1:57 pm at 1:57 pm #543473

First Look: PHILCO Bar+Diner
Published on June 28, 2013 4:10 pm
PHILCO is the newest restaurant concept from Randy and Tina Corbin, which soft-opened last night at 747 North High Street. The new bar and diner replaces the former Phillip’s Coney Island location, and offers a modern update to the old concept. The menu still centers around diner staples like burgers, pot roast and of course… coney dogs, but also features some new specialities from Chef Andrew Smith, such as bbq duck wings, pickled beet carpaccio, and luna burgers.

Restaurant Review: Philco Bar + Diner

From the looks of it, Philco Bar + Diner is the sort of thing that’s in the right place at the right time. Filled to the gills with patrons, Philco is a petit little joint in the Short North. It just opened in the old Phillip’s Coney spot, filling the shoes of a century-old local institution. Things are different now. The new diner is slick. It’s a diner where you’ll see guests swirling their wine glasses… while gulping down a biscuit sandwich: clearly a good fit for the neighborhood.

Stopped by tonight and had a very nice early dinner. The service was prompt, courteous and enthusiastic and for the most part the food was delicious. I had only two minor complaints; the paper menus (place mats) we were given were stained and had bits of old food stuck on them and my Boston Cream Cup Pie was a little too dry for my taste. Aside from that I was impressed and will be happy to eat there again.

Restaurant review: Firing on all cylinders, Philco offers phenomenal HH bargains
By G.A. Benton Columbus Alive

They’re practically giving it away during happy hour at cheeky, stylish and fun Philco Bar + Diner. I mean a highfalutin, highly desirable — but usually high-priced — Rockmill beer for only $4!?! Fantastic local fried cheese curds for $3? Little corn dogs and mini-flavor-bomb coney dogs for a buck? Seriously, tipsy-time concessions this grin-inducing are hard to find.
