Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, a Mid-Atlantic based discount chain, opened their 86th store today, and their first in Columbus. Patrons were greeted with free donuts, coffee and soda, and welcomed by some of the executive staff – including company president Mark Butler and chief operating officer Dave Campbell.

The new store replaced a long skuddled Drug Emporium, a drug store chain that closed several locations in the 90’s. Their second Columbus location opening in a month from now will replace the long abandoned Big Bear store in the Great Southern Shopping Center. This is great news for the North and South ends of town, who have been looking at these vacant properties for years.

There are several bargains to be found inside in various departments: kitchen essentials, snack foods, gardening supplies, books, hardware – even rolls of carpet. Savings seemed to be up to 50% on many items I purchased today. They are supplied from manufacturer overstock, salvage, and liquidation sources, so their stock will fluctuate from week to week based on their recent acquisitions.

Elbow to elbow with the large crowd this morning, the staff was upbeat and courteous, something I look forward experiencing on my next visit, as well as the free coffee. A large kettle of coffee will always be brewed for their honored customers, a kind gesture that would put a smile on the face of their founder, Mort Bernstein.

I’ll have to check it out. From the look of things here, it reminds me of Maine’s Mardens, which was one of my favorite places to just browse through when I was in Lewiston.

Merc, Grossman’s has a lot of home improvement, garden, and tool related items. And they stock bigger home improvement items, like doors, paneling, windows, and lumber. It’s a great place to go for the bigger stuff. Ollie’s is more like an Odd Lots with food products and household goods, but better pricing. I had to laugh today at the endless palettes of Ed Hardy jeans for $29, though. Good God, send that stuff back to wherever it came from.
