    Yeah, but just looking at the layout of that single-use subdivision, I still can’t get over how isolated it looks. That’s why, of all the various urbanist buzzwords that have filled my vocabulary over the years, mixed-use is the one I keep coming back to. Not that neighbors are bad or anything, but what attracts people seeking the urban lifestyle is the amount of nearby things to do, not the amount of neighbors whose houses you could conveniently walk to (since you probably won’t actually be doing that all that often).

    That eighties-era split-level is in a good school district tho…

    Not always. That’s just the generic generalization that everyone repeats until it is accepted as fact. There are some not-so-great suburban schools. And there are some great urban schools. It’s all much more specific than any generalization could ever be.

    Same goes for the suburbs = safe, city = unsafe mantra that many people parroted for the better part of the last half century. Some people still believe that as a universal truth, but obviously, it’s not.
