@flinn2002: I think the city has been pretty successful in bringing people downtown in the past 10 years with several new events and entertainment options. The thing we should concentrate on the most is getting more residential downtown. That will give more of a 24/7 vibe, not yet another stadium.

I agree with heresthecasey. There is vast potential for a dense urban village around the current stadium. Right now it is a concrete wasteland. Even if they wanted to build another stadium, there is plenty of room right next to it. There could easily be a few thousand people living within this village and parking structures could take care of the surface parking. As much as I would love to see a new stadium built downtown, it might not be the best idea.

I’m all for building skyscrapers full of condos and apartments, and if this was the working version of Simcity 2013. I would place 4 decent high rises behind COSI and have around 5,000 people in apartments with food options, entertainment in Franklinton or have a pedestrian bridge built from Vet’s Memorial to North Bank Park for easy access to the Arena District.

Personally, I say move Crew Stadium to the Arena District, and the Ohio Historical Center next to COSI. Build some new hotels and motels on the site of the existing stadium, and make the current OHC site the actual home of the rumored forthcoming inner-city Wal-Mart, taking much of the Wally-world pressure off current and future local vendors in the SN and Downtown.

With the hotels in place, you could make the Walmart shopping trip a two day event.

A Crew stadium downtown might be better suited if it works more as a multi-purpose arena. The small number of Crew games would mean a pretty large, vacant area downtown for most of the year. It’s not really a good urban solution unless the programming of the arena is consistent. There is talk about a multipurpose complex tied to the convention center — I think an enclosed (enclose-able) stadium for the Crew could work if it’s part of a convention center deal.

Isn’t that the same case for Huntington Park? I would think a new Crew Stadium would be well suited for multi-purpose events, especially since the current one already hosts some.

Clippers = 72 scheduled home games
Crew = 17 scheduled home games

I still think the best idea is to focus on creating a soccer complex around the current stadium. Get the parking into garages and then use the land for youth fields, adult leagues, an indoor bubble dome for winter and a complex for OSU and some of the great DIII programs in the area (OWU, Denison and Otterbein) to use. You could also try and lure in a sports rehab facility. The soccer facilities would be used every weekend March – November.

I really REALLY like that idea.. minus that idk how many fans each program attracts but maybe do an early season invitational at the stadium the weekend of an OSU away football game.. Maybe Captial vs Otterbein Friday night, OSU vs Akron Saturday afternoon and Crew vs. Chicago on Sunday night.

I really like the idea of a soccer ‘village’ an indoor training facility for the team and whoever else so they don’t have to go to Florida for training camp. But I also feel that another hotel in that area is needed as well.

That would be cool except the Crew don’t own the land around the stadium and the land is kind of used by the owners quite a bit for the thing across the street (the fairgrounds).

With the way the stadium was built, erector set style, it would cost almost as much to completely renovate it as it would be to build a new one.

You’re exactly right. The concept of a huge soccerplex/neighborhood at the current site is interesting but would be completely out the crews hands as they don’t own the land. Also parking garages would not be adequate for the state fairground and expo center’s use. Just attend a crew game during quarterhorse congress and look at at the hundreds if not thousands of rv’s and trailers that are parked all over the property that would not be able to use a garage structure.

How about moving it to the West Side near the Casino?

But if you were to relocate the historical society to downtown it would create space for something like that to happen without getting rid of the suface lots for the quater horse congress

I’m thinking the White Castle Corporation and residents of 600 Goodale might take issue with that plan haha…
