Scott and I are no strangers to trying pushing house music, or underground music in general, to downtown Columbus. Simply put, it’s never been an easy task over the past decade.

You need to have a combination of many things, but most importantly:

    – A rock solid venue for hosting dance music events (not exactly abundant in the downtown area)
    – A LARGE group of dedicated friends who will show up regardless of patrons who came because of the flyer, etc.
    – Serious marketing acumen and social networking skills. Also, pigheaded determination to promote your ass off.

Downtown Columbus can be a very uphill battle when it comes to promoting music events. There is a severe lack of foot traffic that other cities with more lively downtowns have to offer. You literally have to steer people to your event in droves if you want to succeed.

I’ve also done my fair share of DJ’ing downtempo/acid jazz/deep house sets over the years. It’s a form of music I’m almost more passionate about than any other. It’s just not the type of music that will fill up a bar simply by itself. It’s not trendy. Bar owners want lots of patrons more than anything else. You can be playing a DJ set that would make Gilles Peterson bow down in honor, but if that bar isn’t crowded you might not be around for long.

I hope you don’t take my comments as blind pessimism, or lack of support. It can be done, but it’s putting all of those pieces together that’s a tricky feat. Wishing you the best.

Dude… I would love for this vibe to be downtown in Columbus. I often daydream about it… like seriously. Love that vibe. I often dream of something like some kind of “housefest” even. Somewhere unconventional like in OTE In the springtime, slightly warm with a breeze… house beats and vendors all day. Yuuuuppp

But foreal’s I’m going to have to check some of these events out that we do have. I had no idea. My ears and soul have been DYIINNG to get lost in the rhythm for a long time now.

Thank you.. It’ll all come together in due time. I don’t mind just to play a small art gallery in the short north or set up outside in Franklin Park every once in a while. At this point in my small career, this has become a hobby again & this is the vibes I’ve been concentrating on for the past 5 years. Before that, yup.. mainstream. That’s where the money is since 89′ when I participated.

Thanks again for the suggestions… I already know it’s an uphill climb but, as one other dj has said above: build it & they will come. Peace.
