About two years ago, a group of us noticed how many more kayaks and canoes we were seeing atop cars and on the waters around Columbus. Last spring we started talking about the rise in popularity of paddling and related sports like mountain biking and tent camping, and they said we should organize an event for people who like to do things such as paddle a canoe or kayak, ride a bike, camp in tents and go backpacking. Well, we did it; the event is called “PaddlePalooza! Ohio’s Outdoors Expo” and it’s scheduled to be held April 30 and May 1 at the Lausche Building at the Ohio Expo Center. The question is: the very people who we hope come to the event often engage in those “silent sports” to get away from the masses and out into nature. Are we butting our heads against the wall by expecting them to spend a few hours on a spring weekend at the fairgrounds? We’ll have plenty of gear and kayaks for sale and seminars and workshops on how to use it all, but just ’cause we built such an event, will people come? And pay $5 to park and $10 to get in the door?
