Calling all superheroes! Dust off your capes, and head to the “Be Your Own Superhero” 5K run and walk at Genoa Park in downtown Columbus at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, hosted by Girls on the Run of Franklin County.

Nearly 500 of the participants will be girls in 3rd through 8th grades from throughout Franklin County, who have trained with volunteer coaches at 36 local sites for 10 weeks as part of the Girls on the Run program, which combines running with lessons about important topics such as preventing bullying, processing emotions, serving the community, and making wise choices. The 5k race is the culminating event of the fall season.

The 5K is family-friendly, non-competitive and open to the public. Runners and walkers of all ages and levels are encouraged to register. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Girls on the Run scholarship fund, which aims to make the non-profit’s program accessible to all girls in the community, regardless of their ability to pay the registration fee.

Online registration is open through Thurs., Nov. 14, and packet pick-up will be held at Fleet Feet Sports, 1270 E. Powell Rd., Lewis Center, 43035 on Nov. 14 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Fri., Nov. 15 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Registration and packet pick-up will also be available on race day from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. General registration is $35.

Event day parking is available for $5 (cash or major credit card only) in COSI’s northwest parking lot at the corner of Broad and Belle St.

Girls on the Run of Franklin County is an independent council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of 200+ locations across the United States and Canada. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade that teaches life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games and culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.
