Westland Mall Redevelopment
August 27, 2012 8:57 pm at 8:57 pm #93459
Have been hearing more and more rumors of an Easton like shopping center popping up on the run down site of the old Westland mall. God knows that part of town could use it. Any truth to this? Has anyone else heard anything?August 27, 2012 9:01 pm at 9:01 pm #511460August 27, 2012 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #511461

Yeah, no. There’s no counterpart to New Albany on the West side filled with discretionary spenders to motivate high-end retail tenants… the casino will bring things to the West side, but you may want to lower your sights a little bit to see the target.August 27, 2012 11:25 pm at 11:25 pm #511465

I do not drive by here often, (Westland), just hope one day, it appears better than it does today.August 28, 2012 1:18 am at 1:18 am #511466

Yeah, but it never had development support. Was never backed by Wexner, that’s for damn sure. It was a boondoggle.
If it can’t be a decent outlet mall (I still totally think this would work)… It just needs to be some retail & look like someone gives a shit about it.August 28, 2012 1:52 am at 1:52 am #511470
Or take advantage of the casino and build up Westland to offer more family friendly entertainment.August 28, 2012 2:15 am at 2:15 am #511471
There is a “Weston Vision” economic development plan, but it doesn’t specifically outline an Easton-like lifestyle shopping center. I think there’s just some confusion because “Weston” sounds like “Easton”.
Nearly every neighborhood has one of these, but few are actualized in the way that they are originally envisioned. They’re put in place to help guide private development. But without a private developer, they can largely be considered “shelved”…
Anyway, more info on the “Weston Vision” plan, here:

there is a weston vision and then there is the weston development plan…which hasn’t been made generally available. the weston mixed use development is exactly like easton…only not upscale and even less attached to the nearby neighborhood. I hope you’re right twixlen, because it really didn’t look like anyone gave a crap about westonAugust 28, 2012 3:48 am at 3:48 am #511473
Westland seems like a good location for mixed-use retail but too many developers are scared off if the area can’t support “upscale” shopping experiences.
If I were to predict the next new mall, it wouldn’t shock me if one popped up at the new I-71 / 665 interchange in Grove City. There’s a ton of growth, new housing, and available land over there. That whole area feels like Tuttle did 15 years ago or Polaris 10 years ago.
Personally, I’d rather see Westland reborn but they’ll probably go “where the money is”.
