Walker EvansKeymasterI guess no one lives near the casino…

Mister ShifterParticipantIn a total lapse of judgement, I moved within a mile of that area about 10 years ago. I don’t have many nice things to say about it. My car got broken into constantly, maybe 4 times in the span of about a year and a half. There are lots of strip malls filled with ‘Check Into Cash / Instant Payday’ type places. Lots of fast food chains that are dirty and 10 years behind the rest of Columbus, in terms of renovations. I couldn’t get away from the West Side fast enough.

MatthewParticipantThose of us who live near the casino have stopped posting here by and large since the majority of the primary cu clique have come out with strong anti west side sentiment – Repeatedly ad nauseum. I would suggest trying to get more info on City Data site or social media.

bayreaParticipant1) if your screen name is “goaway” you might not get tons of responses.
2) it sucks by the casino… 6 lane roads, vacant strip malls, and check cashing places. If that’s what you like, go for it.September 20, 2014 6:10 pm at 6:10 pm #1042419

Clique-y, anti-West Side bias? You honestly think CU has an axe to grind with the West Side?
I lived on the West Side for a decent portion of the past decade. I needed a low-cost apartment after I finished college, and my family lived off Georgesville & 270. I’m close to them and wanted to try to stay nearby, so I rented a place off Sullivant.
Excuse me if I don’t mince words, but the West Side is overall a pretty grimy area. I’d venture to say most Columbus natives feel that it doesn’t really have anything worthwhile to offer in terms of entertainment, food, pleasantries, or atmosphere. To a large degree, it’s forgettable strip centers, a barren shopping mall, huge vacant buildings that used to house 1990’s retail chains like Media Play, and countless poorly-maintained fast food restaurants.
I’d love to hear what I’m missing. What would compel someone to travel to Sullivant, Broad, or Georgesville Rd on any given day? Name a handful of restaurants, stores, sites, or attractions on the West Side that Columbus should be proud of.
Matthew, I tried to dig up some of your posts where you explain why the West Side is a nice area, but all I could find was you complaining about loud music, where you quoted it’s “Not the greatest part of town.” Here:

And, where you described people regularly stealing thousands of dollars of merchandise from your back yard, and “crazies” digging through your dumpsters on a daily basis, here:

Sounds like a wonderful place to recommend to others, wouldn’t you say?

MatthewParticipantWestgate is an excellent reason to visit. Dirty Franks West is another one. In June 2009 I lived on Oak St which incidentally isn’t on the West side. You got me on the loud music post tho – I guess they probably don’t have that in your posh side of town. Off you go now, back to your original anti west side rant so we can all gag ourselves with a spoon.

Just curious…whereabouts off Sullivant? It does go from near downtown all the way to Galloway road and all.
I think that there are some decent pockets scattered about in the west side, that are relatively inexpensive compared to other areas. Among older areas I think that Westgate and the area around Bishop Ready are not that bad.
The problem is if you find a nice decent inexpensive place in a decent area of the west side, if you want to actually do anything you have to travel outside the west side to do it-aside from fast food, etc. parts of it can be an ok place to live-if you are in the right area-but I really can’t recommend it as a place to visit.
While parts of it are ok for living, I must admit it just does not have a lot to offer otherwise.
I grew up on the far west side, and I acknowledge it has gone downhill over the years..er… alright..decades.
*Also, I have perused the forum for years before joining, and I certainly have read more than a few snarky or degrading snotty “extra’ comments about the west side.

There’s no clique. There may have been a handful of people who disagreed with you about something, but all opinions are welcome here. If you have good information to share about local neighborhoods, this is a good place to do it.

I lived in an apartment complex that I think is now called “Lake Eden”. It’s just east of Norton Rd.

Mister ShifterParticipantSorry if I came across as combative or overly-negative, but I just really did not enjoy my time living on the West Side. With all of the crime I dealt with, and just my overall unhappiness with the area, has left me with a really bad taste in my mouth. I obviously don’t have an anti-West Side agenda (why would I?), nor do I consider myself part of any clique. These are my thoughts, and mine alone.
Yes, Westgate is a pleasant area. I’ll give you that. But if the only other thing you can list about an area as expansive as the West Side is a hot dog parlor (I love all of Lessner’s establishments, for the record), than I think that says something.
September 20, 2014 9:59 pm at 9:59 pm #1042429
SnarfParticipantI think that I’m the sole member of the “clique” that dogs the west side. Mostly because it deserves it, but it’s also funny to watch people get all butthurt about geography.
So beef with me if you like but don’t lump in CU, you’re just throwing the baby out with the bath water…which ironically I’ve heard actually has happened over there in the bottoms.
September 20, 2014 10:47 pm at 10:47 pm #1042430
Walker EvansKeymasterMy 2 cents…
The “West Side” is a completely vague and practically useless term, as is the “North Side” or “East Side” or “South Side”. These are geographically huge areas, and there are vast differences between the individual neighborhoods (and individual streets) within each of them.
When the OP asked about living near the Casino, I assumed they were referring to the low-quality apartment buildings located within walking distance of the casino. And most of them aren’t that nice last time I checked.
Westgate though, is a whole different ballgame. Great residential community (not a ton of commercial accolades, which I can sympathize with here in the KLD). Westgate park is 2.3 miles from the Hollywood Casino, which some might say is fairly close, but that’s the same distance from the South Campus Gateway to the Ohio Statehouse, and I don’t think anyone considers those two things to be located in the same neighborhood.
West Broad through most of The Hilltop has some of the most untapped potential in terms of revitalization in the entire city. The only thing holding it back is the lack of investment from the city/state in making Broad Street a pedestrian-friendly and neighborhood-centric thoroughfare instead of a mini-highway.

MatthewParticipantOk, I apologize too for using the C word, although when you see a bandwagon of individuals consistently whipping and beating the same dead horse it starts to feel like one… I digress. It wasn’t aimed at any individual, but rather the plethora of threads about the casino on the shitty west side. We’ve heard it. We’re out here fighting blight daily and truth told, most of the hilltop isn’t nearly what our local media would have you believe. It frustrates the hell out of plenty of us that when a woman gets stabbed in HILLIARD at a Planet Fitness it gets reported as “live from the west side!” though. I mean, damn… ya know? Snarf you’re the prez of it. lol
