Awesome! I found the DEMF thread…..only been to 08 and it was fun as hell, the lineup already looks sweet and theres at least a few dozen more artists to be announced..Bassnectar, Cox, and Benassi now if only paxahua can get PVD, Armin, Tiesto, or DAFT

Man, RJ and Z-trip both put down such bangin shows that it would be impossible for me to avoid them

I saw Prodigy was just added. If I weren’t leaving for vacation the next day I’d be very tempted to go up for that! Only 4 shows in the US.

That’s not gonna happen. This is a techno event. I do believe, however, that some trance has shown up in the area in the past at some afterparties. I may be going for the first time this year. I am way past due for DEMF and I like the lineup for Movement so far.

BLEH

Absolutely not going to happen (thankfully)..

I have seen Hip-Hop (most notably Slum Village in 2000) at DEMF, so it’s not out of the realm of possiblity to have non-techno acts on the main stage, but I don’t see a Detroit promoter ever putting Trance on at DEMF.. I think people would storm the stage..

P.S. Fuck Trance

haha, tell us how you really feel, lol…. gotta say I don’t feel quite the same, but to each his own.. I will always love trance, but I enjoy almost all forms of edm as well. The more I examine the lineup for Movement(they just added some more), the more enticed I am to head up there this year. Quite a few djs I have not yet seen live, and some others I have been impressed with in the past. Gotta wait and see if anybody I know wants to roll up there. It really is silly that I have not made it to a DEMF yet as much as I love the music, but it’s just too hard to convince my CBus friends to subject themselves to techno music….grrrrr

Hmmmm.. good line up. I have never been just because I really don’t like Detroit as a city. I really want to see Ztrip live so maybe I will venture up. Anyone know where the dates and times for the Dj’s are going to be posted?

Go anyways, you will make new friends. You cannot compare DEMF to any other event, It’s truly unique and the best way to understand why people who love techno hate trance. You might come home thinking differently about music.

Techno = The Beatles
Trance = The Monkees

Techno = Jay Z
Trance = Vanilla Ice

I can’t wait to hear Luciano v. Loco Dice!

haha, nice analogies Scott… Seriously though, I really do love both Techno and Trance, and am pretty sure I always will. Not to mention my love for almost anything prog, as well as most house, and a good amount of DnB. I know there is a lot of disdain for trance within the techno community, but I am one of the rare people who really does get into both genres. Each gives off a different vibe, which I love.

I may have to roll solo up to Detroit to check it out… I am still waiting to hear from some out-of-town friends to see if they plan on going. My closest EDM friends are scattered all over the world now, and I’ve long since given up twisting my friends’ arms to accompany me to events they wouldn’t even enjoy.

The main reason I wanna go is to be exposed to some acts I haven’t seen yet. Though there are a few I have seen that I absolutely MUST see again. That’s what I love about festivals… you can catch a lot of stuff in a short time and space. Below are the DJs I most wanna see. Most of these I have seen before, but I dont wanna miss them. Other than that, like I said, I want to see some DJs I’ve never heard of..

Oh….. and of course….. THE AFTER PARTIES!!

Adam Beyer
Audion (Live)
Damian Lazarus
Dennis Ferrer
Derrick May
Francois K
Guy Gerber (Live)
Kate Simko (Live)
Loco Dice vs. Luciano
Marco Carola
Nic Fanciulli
Osunlade
Seth Troxler
Steve Bug
Tiefschwarz
Tiga

Hah.. so true..

True story..

I had a coworker who I’d have a few beers and play records with.. He loved trance and was always on about how great it was.. To me it pretty much seemed (and still does seem) like the same formula over and over (cue the snare rush).

So one day he puts on a record by some big producer who’s name escapes me.. I concede that it sounds pretty good…. I grab a record I think will go into it and it’s almost the same record modulo some snare rushes and other trace bs tacked onto it..

The “big name producer” guy had gone and totally bit Innerzone Orchestra’s “Bug In The Bassbin” and stuck his own name and title on it. What balls!

“Bug in the Bassbin” is a classic Detroit track from back in the day and pretty revered by Techno and Jungle/DnB DJs.. I have to wonder if it ever got back to Carl. That’s not the only instance of that I’ve heard since then but it was the most egregious and to be honest the funniest..

Said coworker is a big Detroit Techno fan now btw, dono if he ever kicked the trance habit, but I think he did..

Great analogy Scott!

Luciano vs. Loco Dice = VERY FUN! Those guys mesh very well… Lots of wild horns!!

Audion (live)= My favorite! He’s on a completely different level than anyone else out there today. Mind warping music!!

Can’t wait!

Stay at the Ren. Center Marriot. It is 2-3 blocks from the festival, a very easy walk for a mid-day stop-in from the festival (it’s the classic skyscraper in pictures of Detroit with the GM sign on top). I have stayed there the last 3 or 4 years and loved it. Before that I stayed at The Athenium in Greektown near the casinos. Is was a VERY nice hotel room and close to a number of restaurants, but it is a bit expensive and a “long” walk to the festival.

In recent years, the official DEMF website has had a page that lists the more “official” afterparties. I, however, often have just searched the web for the “smaller” afterparties that still have big time DJs…just in a more intimate setting. Last year I saw Frankie Fellicaino, Julius the Mad Thinker, and Karizma at this small 2-story gallery/loft place for $8 and it was some of the best live music I have ever heard. Shoulder-to-shoulder the whole night, and just hangin’ out with Derrick May for an hour (he is a big fan of Karizma I guess).

The House line-up at the festival is a little weak this year, but I would recommend Mike Huckaby, Osunlade, and Dennis Ferrer for those House fans out there. It seems every year, at the last minute, they add 3 major House DJs to the bill…last year it was Mark Farina.

Unfortunately, I will be missing this year’s festivities (the first time in 5 or 6 years) to attend a wedding in Maryland….so have fun folks and we will be back next year.

I just booked my room at the Marriott RenCen, but some of my friends will be staying at the Holiday Inn Suites which is a nice option as you can sleep 4 (or more if you want to camp out) and you also have a kitchen for cooking meals.. I’ll probably be going over for “Techno Pancakes” at least one day..
