Corrin RaddParticipantI wonder if West siders would have been so enthusiastically courting the casino move if they’d known this. Where did I read that Columbus’s West side has one of the highest per capita rates of smoking in the nation? So now nobody from the neighborhood is going to be able to work there.

And I’d argue that if you think the west side has a high percentage of smokers, that you haven’t spent much time in the south. I live here, and don’t find more folks smoking here than anywhere.

Maybe it could lead to a double win for new employees, a job and reason to quit smoking.

MoneyDragonMemberGood luck finding westsiders that don’s smoke.
I like the idea of restricting the workforce to non-smokers, beside the obvious health insurance discounts you will get a more productive staff if they don’t have to run outside every hour for a break.

AnonymousInactiveWhen we bought our house in ‘95, I got life insurance to cover the mortgage if I died. When I found out I was going to become a father in 2001, I wanted to increase the coverage and acquiesced to my insurance agents repeated suggestion that I try to qualify for a policy that only the healthiest 10% of the population qualifies for. She reminded me that I said I smoked the occasional cigar when I got my initial policy and that any tobacco would automatically disqualify me. I said that I experimented with cigars back in the ’90s when it was trendy, and hadn’t had one in years. I found out later that they test for nicotine (but curiously didn’t care about alcohol [or even marajaroni] even though they new my occupation).
I managed to qualify and have a 30 year life insurance policy.
I figure if actuaries think any tobacco is that bad, it’s not worth it.January 10, 2013 3:47 pm at 3:47 pm #475830
Alex SilbajorisParticipantUpdate, today I got some junk mail advertising life insurance. The monthly rates for $200,000 of coverage:
male
Age 50 – 54 (my bracket)
non-nicotine user $77.99
nicotine user $183.99Female rates for that age bracket are $49.99 / $124.99
