I read an article in the dispatch this weekend that the Byers Dealership on Broad Street in Franklinton will be closing and moving to Grove City by the end of 2014. With the residential development across the street (I cant think of the name), I was wondering if there were any plans for redevelopment for this site as of yet?

Isn’t the old Graham Ford dealership still sitting empty after five or six years now?

    Unfortunately, I believe it is.

I’d say Byers is in a little bit better location overall (being east of 315) and a little closer to the redevelopment action going on in East Franklinton. But these are some big plots of land. Going to take a big developer to come in and do something with either site.

Well, that is unfortunate because I kind of liked Byers. They definitely better than average as dealers go and it was nice having a dealership downtown where you could drop your car off on your lunch break or go shopping after work on a Friday.

I don’t live in the southern part of the metro area though and I can see no reason why I would want to go to Grove city, so will have to find a new Chevy dealer.

NRI to Redevelop Byers Chevrolet Site in Franklinton
    May 20, 2014 9:49 am – Walker Evans

Nationwide Realty Investors (NRI) has redeveloped The Arena District, is currently working on Grandview Yard, and now has turned their attention to Franklinton with news of a major property purchase on West Broad Street. The Byers Chevrolet dealership at 555 West Broad Street was announced as closing recently, and today NRI has stated that they are in contract to purchase the eight acre property.

Hopefully they come up with something a little different in design than their normal work. It’s great this lot is getting redeveloped but their work is getting to be a little repetitive (3-5 stories boxes, all brick).

Let me guess….mixed use, commercial on the bottom and overpriced trendy residential on top?

When you build new apartments, they’re going to be expensive.

Just like when you want to buy an expensive car, you go to the dealership and buy the brand new model.

If you want a cheaper car, you go to the used car lot and buy one that’s been around a few years.

If you need a cheaper apartment in Franklinton, you don’t have to look that hard.

There’s a very strong market for exactly this type of development, and this area of Franklinton is rapidly improving. If developers can get what they’re asking, they will.

    Good call, Walker! ;)

Could NRI’s designs be more aesthetically interesting/inspired? Absolutely.

But, they have the basics down right, which really is definitely what is most important, especially here in Franklinton. 3-5+ story mixed-use buildings are exactly what this site needs, in spades.

The last of the downtown auto dealers is ready to say goodbye. Byers Chevrolet expects next week to begin its move from its 30-plus-year home at 555 W. Broad St. to its new facility in Grove City.

I wonder when we can expect development plans for this site. NRI seems to move slowly at times… like with the Arena District residential planned for the old casino site. We heard about that years ago.

Yeah… what on earth could be distracting them…

They’re a major company. They handle multiple projects at once. But if what you’re saying is true, we should expect the Byers site to sit undeveloped for years to come.
