Tickets are now on sale for a unique new event merging food and fashion.

The brainchild of Explorer’s Club Executive Chef Dan Varga, Couture Cuisine is a six-course dinner with dishes inspired by the work of six local fashion designers: Crys Darling for Label Yourself, Madeleine Etter for Phyllis + Hazel, Esther Myong Hall for Torn Angel, Jacquar Jean-Jacques, Kelli Martin for Anti.Label, and Betsy Stevenson for Elizabeth Ashleigh Designs.

While attendees are served each course (complete with a wine pairing), they’ll feast their eyes on a fashion show featuring the garments that served as Varga’s inspiration when he created the Couture Cuisine menu.

“So many different things can inspire my dishes,” said Varga. “I always come up with unusual combinations of flavors because I’m inspired by a particular ingredient or a mood. I think fashion is going to be a really cool inspiration for some very creative recipes.”

Attendees can expect dishes made with seasonal ingredients from local farmers and producers.

“Chef Dan uses unusual combinations of sweet and savory ingredients, creative twists on traditional dishes, and inspirations from all different cultures,” said Martin, who will emcee Couture Cuisine alongside Johnny DiLoretto.

“There will be some vegetarian courses, but he is so great at creating these dishes that the meat lovers won’t even notice it’s missing,” she added.

Couture Cuisine will serve as a fundraiser for the CHA Animal Shelter as well as Alternative Fashion Week, which is scheduled for June 1-9.

“The overriding goal of our organization is to increase the growing buzz about Columbus fashion by doing lots of participatory events for all kinds of people, so it’s a great way to get involved in the community and support our local industry,” Martin said. She is one of Alternative Fashion Mob’s founders.

Aside from the 10 percent donation to CHA Animal Shelter, proceeds from the dinner will be used to stage Alternative Fashion Week ’13.

Couture Cuisine will be held at 6 p.m. Sun., May 5 at Explorer’s Club, located at 1586 S. High St.

“We are limited to 40 seats, so get your tickets while the gettin’s good,” Martin said.

Tickets are $74 per per person.
