Ambrose & Eve looks to host a dinner party with Midwestern hospitality every day, opening its doors in the Brewery District on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
Owned by local chefs and restauranteurs Matt Heaggans (The Rossi, Flatiron Bar & Diner) and Catie Randazzo (Challah! Food Truck), Ambrose & Eve takes on the look and feel of your grandparents’ house back in 1940. It makes sense, as the restaurant is named for Randazzo’s grandmother and grandfather, whose portrait centers the bar.
Randazzo and Heaggans, inspired by the dishes from their past, have created a menu with an updated take on American classics. Midwestern dishes like chicken and dumplings and veal parmesan make their appearances, the former prepared with papperdelle, chicken ragout and fried peppers, and the latter featuring bucatini, raspberry marinara, and veal sweetbreads.
Other entrees include a tuna salad and “liver and onion,” made with chicken liver mousse, onion jam and sourdough foccacia.
“We’re really looking to update Americana, and bring it into the current day,” Heaggans says in a press release.
The menu is veggie-dense, with an entire section designated for them. It features a wedge salad, green bean almondine, pommes fondant (redskin potatoes, miso and herbs), and crispy brussels sprouts. The menu is rounded out with appetizers and two sides: scallion rolls and cornbread.
A “supper” section at the bottom of the menu allows for groups of two to four people to share a meal. Options include fried chicken with rotating fixings and bread, and lamb shoulder with jeweled rice and roti.
The restaurant is set in a stark white house, complete with a front porch. The interior is decorated with relics from Randazzo and Heaggans’ past, with framed pictures dotting the floral wallpapered walls.
Ambrose & Eve is located at 716 S. High St. It’s open at 11 a.m. daily for brunch service and 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday for dinner.
