WOSU Public Media is partnering with Columbus Metropolitan Library to celebrate The Great American Read, a national campaign from PBS where Americans can vote on their favorite book. The summer celebration will include two events, each free to the public, at the Main Library with a trivia night on Friday, August 10 and a family fun day on Saturday, August 11.

Friday marks the start of the literary-themed festivities with the “50 Fiction Facts About Columbus Quiz” from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., featuring trivia quizmasters Christopher Purdy, host of All Sides Weekend on 89.7 NPR News and Classical 101 Host; Kassie Rose, book critic for WOSU Public Media; and Columbus Metropolitan Library’s book expert, Robin Nesbitt. The evening will also feature hors d’oeuvres, drinks and door prizes. Seating is limited so guests are encouraged to register online.

The celebration continues with The Great American Read Family Fun Day on Saturday, August 11, also at the Main Library. From 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., there will be family-friendly activities, crafts, Storytime and the chance to take a picture with a favorite PBS KIDS® character. For more details, visit WOSU online.

Brent Davis, Chief Content Director of Arts, Culture and Life for WOSU Public Media is thrilled to partner with Columbus Metropolitan Library for The Great American Read. “This is going to be a great weekend for book fans of all ages,” he said. “Adults will love the amazing, fun and weird facts about Columbus in fiction we’ve discovered for the Friday night quiz. And Saturday, kids will love hearing stories and seeing their favorite PBS KIDS characters.”

“We’re excited to partner with WOSU Public Media to help uncover America’s favorite book,” said Columbus Metropolitan Library Chief Executive Officer Patrick Losinski. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to bring the community together, inspire reading and highlight the transformational impact that books have on us.”

The Great American Read is the ground-breaking TV series and nationwide campaign from PBS designed to start a national conversation about reading resulting in the vote for America’s best-loved book. The campaign launched with a special in May on WOSU TV announcing the list of 100 books nominated by the public. Americans have been invited to vote online for their favorite book, with the best-loved book to be announced in a broadcast special in October.

Columbus Metropolitan Library has served the people of Franklin County, Ohio since 1873. With its Main Library and 22 branches, CML is well known for signature services and programs like Homework Help Centers, Reading Buddies, Summer Reading Challenge and Ready for Kindergarten. The library’s Strategic Plan supports the vision of “a thriving community where wisdom prevails,” which positions CML to respond to areas of urgent need: kids unprepared for kindergarten, third grade reading proficiency, high school graduation, college and career readiness and employment resources.

WOSU Public Media is a community-supported, noncommercial network of public radio and television stations, and digital services.
