Workshop Series: Exploration in Enameling Hand Sawn Shapes
Thursdays 6-9pm: September 13th – October 4th

Instructor: Jen Townsend

In this four-session class, we will explore a variety of kiln fired enameling techniques to create several finished pieces of jewelry. Students will design and cut out their own shapes from copper sheet, with the overall design of each piece open to interpretation and the inspiration of the student. Instructor will demonstrate and guide students how to build various necklace and earring designs.

Metalsmithing skills to be introduced include: sawing, filing, basic wire forging, earwire fabrication, die cutting, and various finishing techniques. Enameling skills to be introduced include: sifting, stamping and stencil techniques, sgraffito, color layering, and several other color applications with transparent and opaque vitreous enamels. Students will explore these enameling techniques to create samples and several completed pieces. Time is built into this class to give students a chance to experiment and play with these techniques.

Materials and tools will be provided including credit towards sterling silver chain and wire. Options will be available to purchase upgrades or additional sterling silver chain and components beyond what is included in the class fee.

This is a beginning level class, no prerequisite experience is required, but any prior experience will be built upon.

This workshop is for students aged 16+.
Class size is limited to 6 students.

Class meets 3 hours each week for 4 weeks. Attendance is required at all four classes as techniques build upon each other and can’t be re-demonstrated due to time constraints.

Please allow extra time for parking, as it does get busy on Grandview Avenue in the evenings and weekends. Street parking can be found along Grandview Avenue. There is also a large parking lot directly across the street from The Smithery, located behind Spagio and Staufs. Additionally, you may park in the lot behind The Grandview Carryout at the corner of Grandview & 3rd, or the parking lot between the Post Office and Figlio. The PNC bank lot on West 1st Ave is public parking after 6pm.
