Virtual Author Talks: Karen McManus and Barbara Fant

Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) will host authors Karen McManus (July 23) and Barbara Fant (July 31) for free virtual author talks.

Karen McManus is the New York Times, USA Today and international bestselling author of Young Adult thrillers One of Us Is Lying (2017) and its sequel, One of Us is Next (2020). She also published the 2019 teen mystery Two Can Keep a Secret. Her fourth novel, The Cousins, will be published this December.

McManus’ work has been translated into more than 40 languages worldwide. Her books have been named some of the ‘best Young Adult books that adults should read’.

She lives in Massachusetts and holds a master’s degree in Journalism from Northeastern University, which the author says she “mostly uses to draft fake news stories for her novels.”

Barbara Fant is a teacher, performer, award-winning poet and author of Paint, Inside Out. She also published two chapbooks in 2017, RibCaged and Them Brilliant Suns. Her work has been commissioned by local and national organizations including a commission from The Columbus Foundation to create a spoken-word piece to celebrate Columbus’ Bicentennial.

Fant has competed in nine national and world poetry slams and placed 8th out of 96 poets in the 2017 Women of the World Poetry Slam in Denver. She was a featured speaker for TedxColumbus.

She is a native of Youngstown and holds degrees in literature, theological studies and creative writing. Currently, she teaches poetry at Transit Arts and serves as an editor for the Antioch University Los Angeles literary journal, Lunch Ticket.

All of CML’s 23 library locations offer Curbside Pickup – except its South High Branch, which remains under construction through the end of July.

CML will continue to follow guidelines provided by local, county and state health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Digital library resources remain available 24/7 at columbuslibrary.org, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, magazines, movies and music, plus research and learning tools.

During this time of closure, CML has many channels for customers to connect with staff, including:

Live Chat: CML’s live chat feature is a convenient way to get help Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Phone Lines: CML has reopened its phone lines at 614-645-2275 so customers can reach staff members to get the help they need Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Reserve an Expert: Customers can schedule a one-on-one, virtual appointment with a librarian to get help with genealogy, local history, business information, searching for a job or downloading digital content. Customers can also book an online, one-on-one appointment with the Legal Advice Clinic for brief legal questions.
