Vessel Verses

August 1

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 12:00 am on Saturday, repeating until August 29, 2020 12:00 am

From July 2 through September 27, Blockfort Gallery hosts its first exhibition since March, featuring the work of Liz Morrison and Nick Stull. Vessel Verses is an exploration of vessels and the stories they carry. In these works, both figures and objects serve as vessels: boats and coats are physical vessels that hold the person, whereas the individual is a conceptual vessel that holds the self, mind, and spirit. Together, they narrate the traveler’s physical and philosophical journeys through life.

Reflecting the show title, Vessel Verses is also a collection of printed media and poetry that explore the idea of the vessel. Both the exhibit and book are organized into sections that begin with “vessel vs…” These chapter names each identify an element from which a vessel creates separation: a boat separating one from the sea, or a coat separating one from the air.

Weaving multiple styles and media emphasizes the separation of the vessel’s interior from its exterior environment. Dimensionality is conveyed in deep, pictorial spaces, interrupted by flat surfaces and patterns. This conflict between space and surface formally flattens the picture plane, drawing the viewer’s attention to the painting’s objecthood. The canvas itself becomes a final vessel in this show’s story.

Gallery viewings available by appointment through July. Open Gallery hours on Saturdays in August. Masks and social distancing required. Works will be available online for sale starting 7/20.

As with most businesses affected by the pandemic, Blockfort has set guidelines for viewing our exhibitions. We have adjusted our exhibition calendar to host shows for longer periods of time, allowing for a longer duration of the work being available to the public. In lieu of a public opening, Blockfort will be producing short documentary video pieces that will go on social media to introduce the exhibitions to the public. Works will be available for sale on the Blockfort website over the duration of the exhibition. Guests wanting to see the work in person may email [email protected] to schedule visits. Additional viewing hours may be posted on our social media channels. In person guests are limited to no more than six (6) persons in the gallery at all times. Masks are mandatory.
