THIS ONE’S FOR THE LADIES at the Columbus Black International Film Festival
“An exuberant, sexy and sex-filled romp of a movie”
“Outrageously funny and raunchy!”
“The ‘Paris Is Burning’ of underground male strippers”
THIS ONE’S FOR THE LADIES is an award-winning movie for and about black, brown and allied women, black male and ‘dom’ strippers, and the people who love them. That covers a lot of diverse, sex positive people! Yes it’s hilarious. Yes it’s sexy. Yes it’s LGBTQ friendly. And, Yes it’s a little raunchy. But somewhere along the way this award-winning movie pivots into a conversation about race, class, family, community and sisterhood. As Ifama says in her Gal-Dem review:
“To describe This One’s For The Ladies as merely a film about stripping would be to do it a complete disservice. The picture is a heartwarming, reflective, poignant portrait of the intersections of black life in America, focused on the women who uphold the community in a space of pure escape, joy and control.”
That’s probably why at SXSW 2018 THIS ONE’S FOR THE LADIES won a Special Jury Recognition Award for Best Cast, which is pretty unusual for a documentary. But the award speaks to the honesty and heart of the stories and people you see on screen. Repeatedly, audiences from all backgrounds have shown a lot of love for this classy – and yes, a little nasty – theatrical experience.
