The Tapestry of a Street

March 2, 2019 10:30 am @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

Doreen Uhas-Sauer

Doreen Uhas-Sauer, Columbus Landmarks Foundation
There is probably no street that cuts across Columbus with more unknown history and untold tales than Fifth Avenue! Like a thread in a tapestry, it weaves in and out of natural features, industrial sites, wealthy enclaves, ethnic communities, racial boundaries, hopeful dreams and dashed hopes. No need to get in the car; we will travel its length to discover Underground Railroad sites, the Virgin of Guadalupe, a building three times longer than the LeVeque Tower is tall, a water-cure town, the hometown neighborhood of the winner of 14 National Basketball championships, the residence where Goofus and Gallant (of children’s magazine ‘Highlights’) were born, and a wealthy man’s legacy to more than just his own daughters.
