‘The Investment’ startup investing and fundraising education event launches at the Columbus Urban League’s Minority Business Assistance Center (MBAC) in Columbus, OH. Created to educate diverse investors and entrepreneurs, the event jumpstarts a nationwide campaign focused on bridging the wealth gap for African Americans, Latinx Americans, Native Americans, Women, and other communities.

Gauge Cofounder and Values Partnerships Consultant Brandon Andrews and A William Lucas Company (AWLCo) and CREADIO Founder and CEO Will Lucas will host ‘The Investment’ at the Columbus MBAC at 6:00PM ET on December 12, 2018. Andrews and Lucas discussed the idea of hosting community investing events as panelists during the ‘CTRL, ALT, DELETE: Shutting Down Tech’s Racial Gap’ Plenary at the 2018 National Urban League Conference.

“The wealth gap is real and growing. If communities that have historically been socio-economically depressed do not have access to education about startup investing and fundraising, there’s no hope of closing the wealth gap. That’s why we created ‘The Investment,’” says Brandon Andrews, Host, ‘The Investment. “People often ask, “What actually comes out of conferences?” Will Lucas and I first discussed hosting investing education and skill building events as panelists during the 2018 National Urban League Conference. I am excited to return to Columbus, OH to launch our effort to educate diverse investors and entrepreneurs around the country. New U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission rules make it easier to invest in and fundraise for startups. With the SEC in town, I can’t think of a better time to host the event.”

‘The Investment’ will be held after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) 37th Annual Government-Business Forum on Small Business Capital Formation, held at Ohio State University. SEC Chairman Jay Clayton and other SEC representatives will be in attendance and discuss access to capital for entrepreneurs. ‘The Investment’ host Brandon Andrews will participate in the forum as a panelist on the Capital Formation and Diversity panel.

President Obama signed the Jumpstart Our Business Startups JOBS Act into law in 2012. New SEC rules, made possible by the JOBS Act, now allow non-accredited investors to invest in startup companies before they are listed on a public exchange. Entrepreneurs can now raise funds from non-accredited investors, including friends, family, and fans of the business. Andrews and Lucas will discuss Equity Crowdfunding and other new investing and fundraising options for diverse entrepreneurs and investors.

The SEC Office of Minority and Women Inclusion will provide remarks and information to attendees at the event.
