State Auto Christmas Corner Lighting Ceremony

December 4, 2018 5:45 pm @ 5:45 pm

  • Sumo

86 years after State Auto Insurance Group founder Bob Pein began the tradition, State Auto will again flip the switch on its annual Christmas display this Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 5:45 p.m.

A brief lighting ceremony, including a performance by the Columbus Children’s Choir’s New World Singers, will begin at 5:30 p.m. State Auto President and CEO Mike LaRocco will be joined at the lighting by Jon Glinsky, nine-year-old son of State Auto associate Vince Glinsky, of the Cleveland, Ohio area, and winner of State Auto’s annual Christmas art contest. Jon’s winning entry will be on display at Christmas Corner throughout the Christmas season.

The Christmas Corner experience includes a historic life-sized Nativity display, constructed in scenes throughout State Auto’s Pein Park at the corner of East Broad Street and North 11th Street. Visitors can participate in a cell phone tour, which offers callers facts and history about each scene of the Nativity display. Hot chocolate is available for sale many evenings through Jan. 2, with proceeds benefiting the Manna Café at Broad Street United Methodist Church.

A number of local groups will offer free performances at the display through Christmas. Performances will take place at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays through Christmas. At 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve, hundreds of guests gather at Christmas Corner for a brief ceremony during which Baby Jesus is placed in the manger.
From a rooftop Santa Town with thousands of lights and hundreds of Christmas trees, State Auto’s Christmas display has evolved into a display focused on a life-sized Nativity scene, recognized around the world for its beauty and attention to artistic and historic detail. In recent years, lighting and other decorations have been added, reminiscent of State Auto Christmas displays of years past.

State Auto’s Christmas Corner, including its historic life-sized Nativity display, returns to 518 E. Broad St. in December. Official lighting of the display is at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, featuring a performance by the Columbus Children’s Choir.
The display is lighted daily until Jan. 2 and is free and open to the public. Choirs perform on Friday and Saturday evenings in December until Christmas.
