Smoky Brown

January 9 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

columbus artists

from Streetlight Guild: Smoky Brown (1919-2005) was one of Columbus’ most formidable artists, employing various media and techniques to generate an enormous body of work. His work resides in collections around the world, as well as the Smithsonian.

Having recently been given dozens of pieces from Brown’s estate, local art legend Richard Duarte Brown will be curating a building-wide exhibit of Brown’s work, along with pieces from other Black Columbus artists that “Grandpa Smoky” traded and acquired in his lifetime. The exhibit stands as a snapshot of the Columbus Black art scene of the 1970s-1980s, when Black-owned independent galleries and studios flourished in the city. Exhibit will be displayed from 1/9 – 2/1.
