Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor is well known and loved. An earlier version of the play has not been performed since the early seventeenth century. The theater company of the Ohio State University Department of English, Lord Denney’s Players, presents the modern world premiere of Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor.

Shakespeare’s comedic farce explores themes of love, jealousy, revenge, and class. ”Merry Wives is the only Shakespeare play set in the provincial England of Shakespeare’s own lifetime,” artistic director Dr. Sarah Neville noted,“The play has a unique realness”.

The beloved comedy exists in two forms. Many are familiar with The Merry Wives of Windsor as a text from the First Folio, the collection of Shakespeare’s plays published in 1623. Scholars argue that a shorter version– known as the First Quarto, published in 1602– was Shakespeare’s initial draft of the play. The First Quarto text, titled Sir John and the Merry Wives of Windsor, has never been staged as a complete production.

“By producing the first performance of the briefer text, Lord Denney’s Players contributes uniquely to Shakespearean scholarship,” Neville explained. Internationally renowned Shakespeare scholars will travel to Columbus to witness the historic production and participate in a Faculty and Undergraduate Conference to contextualize Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor from April 6-7.

Lord Denney’s Players is the theatre company of the Ohio State University Department of English. The organization empowers students, faculty, and staff of any background to perform early modern drama.

Neville says,“Our production of Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor is a lab for scholars, students, and our community to explore Shakespeare’s creative process.”
“Once I got the language in my mouth as an actor, it transformed the way I read other literature,” Ohio State sophomore Hannah Woods said, “I use everything I’ve learned in my English classes to inform my creative decisions.”

Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor runs April 4-7, 2018 at the Van Fleet Theater of the Columbus Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10 for the public, $5 for students.
