Sinkane’s June tour is celebrating the May 31 release of his new album Dépaysé (City Slang), an outstanding resistance rock record chronicling an immigrant’s journey of self-discovery in Trump’s America. “The music is loud and raw, and it’s bursting with an energy unlike anything I’ve ever done before,” says frontman Ahmed Gallab. Its touchstones range from Parliament Funkadelic & Marvin Gaye to Sly Stone, George Clinton, Bob Marley, and the genre interloping of Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. Perhaps most importantly, though, it found inspiration in the beautiful music of east Africa (notably the Dur Dur Band from Somalia, Mulatu Astatke from Ethiopia, and Mohammed Wardi from Sudan). Check out the recently released title track, which features lyrics in Arabic and English and combines psych-rock with elements of Sudanese folk music, HERE. Listen to the first single “Everybody” which premiered via NPR Music HERE. The album has already seen support from Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Afropunk, Consequence of Sound, Under the Radar, and more.

Dépaysé is a French word that means “to be removed from one’s habitual surroundings.” Gallab connected to this term, which has an extended meaning of feeling disoriented and homeless. “That’s a feeling I relate to very much in these times,” he says. “I want Sudanese kids to see a person like them as a positive role model in the arts. I want Sudanese people, all over the world, to know that the world accepts us even when our own leaders do not.”

Dépaysé is the follow-up to Sinkane’s acclaimed 2017 album Life & Livin’ It, which earned the band their national TV debut on Conan, an NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert, and worldwide acclaim from outlets, including Pitchfork, The Guardian, New York Magazine Vulture, The FADER, Vice, ELLE Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, Magnet, The Washington Post, and more.
