School Garden Series Teaches You the Basics of Educational Gardening

4-H Project Green Teacher is a school garden educational series for educators and others who are interested in learning about school gardening. The winter 4-H Project Green Teacher series is scheduled for January 8 to March 11 and will be held on the OSU Campus in the Kunz-Brundige Franklin County Extension Building located at 2548 Carmack Road. The series explores the many aspects of school gardening. Cost of the series is $150 and the potential to earn 22 contact hours is available. Various presenters are from OSU Extension, area non-profits and area teachers who are engaged in school gardening.

Meeting dates and topics
January 8: First steps; engaging stakeholders and more
January 15: Site selection and soil testing
January 17: Overview of specific garden terms and practices; composting, IPM
January 22: Farm to School connections; Behavior management in the garden
January 29: Garden themes and types; Basic information about growing specific vegetables and other plants including cold weather plants
February 5: Connecting the garden to good nutrition; Taste testing; Soil & water activities
February 12: Grant writing for the school garden; Gardening in Grandview
February 19: Hydroponics, aquaponics and chickens!
February 26: Plant-based foods and their amazing impacts on history; Bees and native pollinators;
March 4: Season extension celebration/certificates

Note: The program will take place on Wednesdays from 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. on the OSU campus. Unless OSU closes due to inclement weather, the series will be held as planned. Please use your own judgement as to your ability to attend these sessions during a weather event.
