Sadie Benning: Pain Thing

April 12

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 12:00 am on Sunday, repeating until April 26, 2020 12:00 am

Sadie Benning became well-known in the early 1990s for making brilliant low-tech videos—urgent and moving confessionals documenting their own teenaged sensibility. For most of the current decade, they’ve concentrated on gallery-based projects, often using found photographic imagery as the base material for works that ultimately combine elements of sculpture and painting into a unique hybrid. For 2020, Benning returns to the Wex with a new work of striking scale and ambition.

Making its world premiere, Pain Thing is a single installation consisting of 63 small wood panels grouped into 19 discrete and separately titled sequences that extend through two galleries. Acrylic paint and photo transparencies are layered on each panel, followed by coats of meticulously applied clear resin. The overall result complicates the relationship between flatness and dimensionality while raising questions of narrative and memory, specifically in relation to traumatic and collectively inherited events.

Benning’s work has been shown at the Wex since the early 1990s. The recipient of a 2003 Wexner Center Artist Residency Award, they presented Suspended Animation, their first-ever solo gallery exhibition, here in 2007.

On view at The Wex February 1, 2020 through April 26, 2020.

Update 3/12/2020 from The Wex:
We’ve been tracking developments regarding coronavirus (COVID-19), and have made the difficult decision to temporarily scale back our programming. We hope normal programming will resume Monday, March 30. This aligns with The Ohio State University’s actions to suspend all face-to-face instruction during this period.

This was not an easy decision and one not made lightly—we are very much in uncharted waters in many respects—but I feel it best serves the safety and well-being of our staff, patrons, and visiting artists.

As of now:

Due to travel restrictions, all Performing Arts events through the spring have been cancelled, with plans to reschedule as many as possible. We will work to notify ticket buyers and other key groups about these changes.

Education events through March 29, including On Pause, walk-in tours, and Wex Lab, are cancelled.

Film/Video programming through March 29 is cancelled. The program with Annie Atkins planned for March 28 will be rescheduled for a TBD date in June.

La Neve’s performance in the galleries scheduled for this Thursday has been cancelled.

The Wex’s exhibition galleries and Store will remain open, though with limited hours (closing at 6pm), and we will be monitoring how the situation evolves to ensure that this continues to be the best course of action.

If you have purchased tickets in advance for any of the events noted above, we will be in touch with you via email regarding refund options. If you have any questions, please contact our Patron Services desk at 614-292-3535.

The health, safety and well-being of our guests and supporters are of the highest importance to us and we appreciate your patience, flexibility, and understanding during this particular moment.
