Now in its eighth year, this cultural festival combines award-winning international
films and local events that celebrate the lives, stories, and art of people with disabilities. ReelAbilities
Film Festival brings the community together to explore, discuss and celebrate the diversity of our
shared human experience. The universality of disability is made visible through the presentation of
films, multimedia programs, and first person narratives. This year’s theme is “Based on a true story.”
Launched as a multi-day festival in 2012, ReelAblities Columbus offers films every fall and every
spring, at no cost. This fall, eleven films from the US and abroad will be featured including full-length
features, documentaries, and shorts which address many facets of the disability experience.
Columbus is one of 17 cities in the States to present the traveling program of ReelAbilities Film
Festival, based in New York, NY (www.reelabilities.org). This year’s evening of short films also boasts
a Columbus production, MISINTERPRETATION, a unique collaborative project from educators and
film producers Nicolette and Matt Swift in partnership with VSA Ohio, Bridgeway Academy and
Thurber House. Through five short films, students explore the theme of bullying.
Every ReelAbilities Film Festival Columbus event in the fall of 2019 features a social hour before the
screening and a related community program, such as presentation, live music, art making, or panel
discussions either before or after the film. This year screenings will be held at the Gateway Film
Center, located at 1550 N High St, Columbus, OH 43201 and The Vanderelli Room, located at 218
McDowell St, Columbus, OH 4321.
Screening events are always free. ReelAbilities Film Festival Columbus is an accessible cultural
event; details are on the website. Professional services must be requested 2 weeks in advance to
guarantee availability. For more information, contact VSA Ohio at 614-241-5325.
