The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS) is hosting a new Popular Culture and the Deep Past event on February 22-23, 2019. This two-day gathering will include an academic conference as well as a carnival of events and activities, focusing on this year’s theme of “Fairies and the Fantastic.”

The conference will explore this theme in the broadly conceived Medieval and Renaissance periods, but it also looks to incorporate examples of fairy belief that connect to more contemporary popular culture. There will be presentations covering approaches from literary, artistic, cinematic and gaming analyses, to historical and cultural investigations, as well as presentations with broad geographical scope that examine the presence of fairies outside Western Europe — in Japan, India and Persia.

The keynote address of the conference, “The Many Roads to Fairyland,” will be delivered by Haunted Ohio author and CMRS alum Chris Woodyard on Friday evening, followed by a reception open to all.

In conjunction with the conference and its theme, we will also host a variety of activities and exhibitions that include artworks, books, manuscripts, calligraphy, falconry, theatre, fiber arts and more!

Admission is free and open to the public.
This event will take place on February 22-23, 2019 in Hagerty Hall (2/22) and at the Ohio Union (2/23) on the Columbus campus.
