HOMEGROWN by Dejiah Archie-Davis + Regina Zehner

Homegrown is a collaborative art exhibition that speaks about the identities of both artists and their notions of ‘home’. By pulling from their personal relationships and familial history, they create an immersive experience to explore how absence and presence influences their daily environment. What is a home when you no longer have one to go to, and what is a home without a community, or when relationships fall apart? And what does it take to create a new home? Homegrown is a means of expression and a moment to realize we are, who we are through the places we live, have seen torn down and the ones will create in the future.

Dejiah Archie Davis (b. 1997) is a multimedia artist from Cleveland, Ohio, who is anticipating on receiving her BFA in Fine Arts, from Columbus College of Art and Design. Her medium expands within painting, sculpture, video, and sound installation. She has exhibited at MOCA Cleveland, and other places such as Corrugate and Acock Galley. She is now focusing on her thesis show to be held at Columbus College of Art and Design.

Regina Zehner (b. 1997) is an artist focusing on familial memory, place, and identity. Through their multimedia practice, the artist investigates how histories from one’s family or collective identity affect current relationships and environment. Regina has co-curated exhibitions such as The Significance of Blue: Sophomore Show at Beaton Gallery and was one of the co-organizers of Space, Community, Resources Panel Discussion with the Black Infinity. The artist is a current junior at Columbus College of Art and Design.

Therefore I Am by Kathryn Seyerle

Therefore I Am is an attempt to honor the people from which Seyerle comes, and the history that has shaped her. She wanted to use this show to acknowledge the needlework of her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother as the primary foundation of her artistic self. Interwoven in that history are the artistic influences of her brothers, other family members, and the friends who have been her family throughout life. This installation uses the Norse Norns and other goddess mythologies to navigate relationships with family, herself, and the surrounding world while also exploring the interconnectedness of what was, what is, and what will be.

Kathryn Seyerle grew up in Indiana and Kentucky and lived in the Pacific Northwest for almost 7 years before moving to Columbus in April 2013. She received a BFA in Book Arts from the University of Kentucky in 2002 and an MFA in Poetry from Spalding University in 2004.

934 Gallery’s 2018-2019 programming calendar is funded in part by a Project Support Grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council.
