*Online* Adult Writing Workshop: Writing the Senses

April 27 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

**THIS CLASS MEETS ONLINE ON THE ZOOM VIDEO PLATFORM.** | MONDAY, APRIL 27 | 6:00 – 8:00 pm | Sense and Sensibility: Writing the Senses | Instructor: Lisa Lopez Snyder | In Gail Honeyman’s novel, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, gardens and mismatched furniture personify the struggle with—and triumph over—loneliness. In Jesmyn Ward’s Salvage the Bones, a family’s complications around love, loss, and identity builds just as fiercely as the approaching Hurricane Katrina. How do these writers turn ordinary lives into extraordinary stories that we suddenly care about? They use sensory details in creative ways. Lisa Lopez Snyder will teach you techniques for writing sensory details to create our own powerful narratives for fiction and nonfiction. We’ll read short story, essay, and novel excerpts to help us understand the ways in which writers draw on the senses to create authentic, three-dimensional characters. We’ll mimic those styles with writing exercises—all new exercises, if you’ve taken this workshop before. By the end of this workshop, geared toward writers at any stage, you’ll leave with “before and after” drafts, as well as tips to inspire you on your writing journey. | INSTRUCTOR: Lisa Lopez Snyder’s essays and short stories have been featured in 34th Parallel, Adelaide, Gravel, The Raleigh Review, The Foliate Oak Literary Magazine, and other magazines. Her essay, “In Transit,” won The Chattahoochee Review’s 2011 Lamar York Prize for Nonfiction and she was named the 2015 Carl Sandburg Writer-in-Residence. | REGISTER: www.thurberhouse.org/adult-workshops
