Ohio Art League Presents: “Accidental Anthropology: Discovering Meaning in the Discarded and Overlooked”

May 11, 2018 7:00 pm @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Excitement continues at The Ohio Art League’ X Space with a new exhibition featuring two member artists. Accidental Anthropology celebrates allegorical storytelling through photographs and assemblages whereby the process of discovery is key for both artist and viewer. Phil Adams and Shelley Bird create visual narratives that seek to reveal new potential in the seemingly insignificant. By appropriating what they find around them, the discarded and overlooked are reimaged and made relevant again. Nothing is waste.

Adams is a self-taught photographer. He likes to see himself as a fly on the wall, secretly exploring his community, capturing images of what we leave behind, and allowing the images to tell thought-provoking stories.

Bird is a self-taught mixed media artist working with found objects and salvaged materials sometimes mixed with ephemera. She sees herself as a scientist, synthesizing the old and new to create new meaning. Both are accidental anthropologists, seeing what is there but unnoticed and making their own discoveries in the visual and cognitive processes of perception.

The artists are donating their proceeds from the sales of all artworks to Community Shelter Board to help people facing homelessness in Columbus and Franklin County. Community Shelter Board leads a coordinated, community effort to make sure everyone has a place to call home. Their network of care served 12,000 people last year.
