The Community of Holy Rosary & St. John the Evangelist is hosting its annual Martin Luther King Day celebration on Monday, January 20, 2020 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Holy Rosary-St. John Church, 660 South Ohio Avenue (between Main and Livingston), Columbus, Ohio. The guest preacher is Rev. Charles Smith, S.V.D. Everyone is welcome!
Fr. Charles Smith is co-director of the Bowman Francis Ministry, a ministry that provides religious education and evangelization to the African American Catholic community. Some of the programs offered include rites of passage, revivals, workshops, school rallies, lectures, counseling and specialized ministries of jail and hospital chaplaincy.
Fr. Smith is also co-founder and director of Ambassadors of the Word Ministries, an African American youth program that educates youth about how to share their knowledge, culture, faith and skills with other youth.
At present, Fr. Smith works full-time as a chaplain at the VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is also District Superior of the Midwest region for the Society of the Divine Word Missionaries. He has numerous awards in civic, religious, social justice, and education work.
Holy Rosary-St. John has been celebrating Martin Luther King Day every year since the holiday was established in 1986. Vernon Hairston will be directing the gospel choir during the celebration, and community artists will be displaying their art.
