Lord of the Rings

For the sixth consecutive year, in celebration of Tolkien Week and Hobbit Day, the independent, non-profit Gateway Film Center is proud to once again screen Peter Jackson’s celebrated The Lord of the Rings trilogy, September 20-22.

“Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings is an epic adventure of good against evil, the power of friendship, and individual courage,” shared GFC President Chris Hamel. “I’m thrilled to journey back to Middle Earth as Gateway Film Center brings the trilogy back to the big screen, and all in original 35mm film!”

September 20, 7:00 p.m. – THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (2001) in 35mm
The future of civilization rests in the fate of the One Ring, which has been lost for centuries. Powerful forces are unrelenting in their search for it. But fate has placed it in the hands of a young Hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), who inherits the Ring and steps into legend. A daunting task lies ahead for Frodo when he becomes the Ringbearer – to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom where it was forged.

September 21, 7:00 p.m. – THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (2002) in 35mm
The second film of the trilogy, The Two Towers follows the continuing quest of Frodo and the Fellowship to destroy the One Ring. Frodo and Sam (Sean Astin) discover they are being followed by the mysterious Gollum. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), the Elf archer Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli the Dwarf (John Rhys-Davies) encounter the besieged Rohan kingdom, whose once great King Theoden has fallen under Saruman’s deadly spell.

September 22, 4:00 p.m. – THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (2003) in 35mm
The final film of the trilogy, The Return of the King won the 2004 Academy Award for Best Picture. In the conclusion of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, the final battle for Middle Earth begins. Frodo and Sam, led by Gollum (Andy Serkis), continue their dangerous mission toward the fires of Mount Doom in order to destroy the One Ring.

“The team and I are big believers in both film as an essential format, and in hunting down and bringing fans surprising movie experiences they can’t find anywhere else,” Hamel continued. “We’re looking every day to give Columbus new experiences, new ways of seeing movies, and ways to present movies as their creators intended.”

The Gateway Film Center regularly offers rare, essential, and influential movies presented in their original 35mm and 70mm formats as part of its celebrated FilMM series, as well as stunning 4K high-resolution restorations. Tickets for the Lord of the Rings Weekend are $12 per screening.
