“Left Politics and Veganism” Public Lecture

February 8 @ 11:00 am

The Columbus Veg Community (CVC) is excited to announce that it will be
hosting its second public talk of the year, which will be centered on Left Politics and Veganism.
The talk will be presented by Evan Thomas, Philosophy Ph.D. candidate at The Ohio State
University and CVC’s Education Director.

“Leftists have historically been hesitant to embrace the vegan movement. Leftists have criticized
veganism as offering a consumerist response to the problems of our food system that
individualizes responsibility for problems that require collective action,” said Thomas. “They
have also objected that veganism is a white-centered, classist, and ableist movement. In this
talk, we intend to both acknowledge that the vegan movement can learn from some of these
critiques but also argue that these critiques do not invalidate the legitimacy of the vegan
movement which belongs with other justice movements on the Left.”

An optional donation of five dollars is suggested to help cover the costs of the event. All
attendees will receive a raffle ticket, with raffle prizes including gift cards and gourmet baked
goods. Many local businesses have provided their support to make this event happen, including
Moonflower Bakery, Alma Images, Freely Vegan, Mana Ice Cream Co, and Josh Smukal.
“Left Politics and Veganism” will be presented at The Columbus Metropolitan Library – Northside
Branch on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. There will be light refreshments.

CVC’s first public lecture of the year, “Interconnected Oppression: Linking Veganism and Other
Struggles,” is available to view on the organization’s Youtube channel:
